And I'm Amber Golwitzer! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts". We were off last week because of the horrible weather, but this week we're back again-bringing you all the latest news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The last time we broadcast the "Bear Facts" was the day of the state large group speech contest. Garrigan made a good showing at state-bringing home two Division I, or "excellent" ratings, and three Division II, or "good" ratings. Students earning Division I's included Amanda Freking, Mandy Rahm, Angie Kohlhaas, and Bob Brandenburg in the acting ensemble "But Listen". The One-Act Play "Happily Ever After" also received a "I". Its cast was made up of Bob Brandenburg, Sarah Kollasch, Marian Studer, Ellie Reising, and Lynn Kohlhaas-as well as Dan Bormann, Angie Kohlhaas, Tony Schmitt, David Murphy, and Amanda Freking.
Among those students earning "II"s at state were Amanda Wolf, Autumn Thompson, Chris Kohlhaas, Sylvia Weber, Rebecca McGuire, Marian Studer, Mandy Rahm, and Rachel Foth in Choral Reading; Steven Kellner, Michael Loebach, Tony Schmitt, Rosalind Kirsch, Beth Becker, Maria Patterson, Jenna Hansen, and Rebecca McGuire in Readers' Theatre; and Mark Rasmusen, Zac Lickteig, Sylvia Weber, Andrea Schiltz, and Michael Loebach in Group Improvisation. Congratulations to all these students and to coaches Mary McCall, Amanda Stewart, Tony Tindall, and Janet Heupel.
With group speech over, it's time for individual speech to begin. Again this year Garrigan will be hosting the district individual speech contest, and students from all around the area will be coming to Garrigan next weekend to compete. As the host school, BGHS will also have one of the largest groups entered at the contest. The Bears have six entries in the "Acting" category alone. They include Angie Kohlhaas with "For Daddy, Wherever You Are", Michael Loebach with "Fat Albert Plays Football", and Bob Brandenburg with "Romeo and Juliet-in the Style of Andy Griffith".
The
Bears' other Acting selections are "Ballet for Boys" by Sarah Schmitt,
"I'm the One Who Stands Out in a Crowd" by Rachel Foth, and "Judy
Calls a Specialist" by Rebecca McGuire.
Another popular category is After-Dinner Speaking, where contestants give
funny speeches to guests at an imaginary banquet.
This year Chris Kohlhaas will be talking to the members of
"Anonymous Anonymous", while Bob Brandenburg will teach people how to
keep a secret.
Garrigan's entries in Prose include Jennifer Faber with "The Scooby Doo/X Files Conspiracy Theory", Dan Bormann with "Where Did I Go Wrong", Janet Kramer with "I Can't Breathe", and the lone freshman contestant, Amber Golwitzer, with "The Waltz". In Poetry, Marian Studer will be reading "Little Red Riding Hood", Mandy Rahm will read "The Three Little Pigs" and Keshar Nadkarni will read "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". Another popular category is Literary Program, where Angie Kohlhaas and Amanda Freking will read both prose and poetry selections.
Steven Kellner, David Murphy, and Andrea Schiltz are all entered in Radio News Announcing. In Improvisational Acting, you'll find Tony Detrick, David Murphy, and Chris Kohlhaas. Autumn Thompson will present the Public Address "Dare to Be an Individualist", while Tony Schmitt will deliver the speech "Not Like Others". The final category is Storytelling, where Garrigan's entries include Rosalind Kirsch with "How the Rhinoceros Got His Snout", Amanda Freking with "Somebody Loves You", and Nicole Elbert with "The Rainbow Fish". This week our Senior Spotlight shines on three people who live east of Algona and whose names begin with "R": Ellie Reising, Josh Richter, and Jake Rahm.
Ellie Reising is a Wesley native who has been active in lots of activities over the years. She's probably most associated with music, speech, and quiz bowl.
Josh Richter also comes from Wesley. He likes tough classes like Math V and Physics. He's been a quiz bowl captain, and he's active in intramural basketball.
Jake
Rahm was a stand-out on defense for the Golden Bear football
team. Now he's a basketball
manager, and he also enjoys intramurals.
We wish Ellie, Josh, and Jake all the best in the future!
On this week's Golden Bear calendar, today there's a Math League competition. Then tonight Garrigan will be hosting the district finals for girls basketball.
Monday is the boys' basketball districts start, and again we'll be hosting the play-offs here at Garrigan. Then Tuesday students in Mrs. Vaske's Business Law class will be watching a real-life court case at the Kossuth County Courthouse.
Girls basketball regionals will be played Tuesday, and boys' districts continue on Wednesday. We hope the Bears will still be playing all week long. Then on Thursday Mrs. Stewart's English classes will be visiting the Algona Public Library.
Finally next Saturday we'll be hosting the district individual speech contest here at Garrigan. As always, the public is invited to check out all the performances.
