And I'm Lizzy Hohmeister! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from
Bishop Garrigan High School.
The annual calendar drive continues through next Tuesday, so if you haven't gotten your calendar yet, be sure to get one soon. The calendars include dozens
of color pictures, as well as listing all the school events for the 2011 – 2012
school year. In addition they enter you in a raffle where you can win from $35
to $500. Calendars cost $25 each, and the money goes to buy buses and suburbans
that we use for school activities. All Garrigan students are selling calendars,
so be sure to get yours today.
The Golden Bear girls cross-country team is on a roll, winning two straight
meets. Last weekend at Holstein they won the small schools division at one of
the biggest meets in the state. It was especially good news that their opponents
in that meet were many of the same teams they'll be running against at
districts. Erin Reedy won the meet, and four Golden Bear girls were in the top
ten. The Bears also won the Emmetsburg Invitational on Tuesday, and we're hoping
they continue their outstanding running throughout the season.
The Golden Bear volleyball team has done especially well in tournament play this
fall. They won their first tournament at Ft. Dodge St. Edmond two weeks ago and
then followed that up with another big victory at Emmetsburg last Saturday.
Tomorrow they have the big CYO tournament, facing schools from all over the CYO
diocese, and we wish the volleyball players good luck.
The Golden Bear football team moved back into the statewide top ten ratings
after wins over Pocahontas and West Sioux. So far none of the Bears' games have
officially counted, since they've played teams from larger classes and in a twin
district. The Bears start play in their own district next Friday at Northwood - Kensett, and
they'll be back home for Homecoming September 30. Good

There's a good chance you've encountered some advertising for Garrigan lately.
You may have heard our president, Gene Meister, doing ads here on KLGA, or you
may have seen billboards for the school south of town or over by Seton. This
past week there was a photographer at school shooting footage for a TV
commercial that will soon be airing on local cable TV. Various donors have
contributed to the ad campaign, which is being organized by the development
office. We thank them for helping us make people aware of the school.
It's strange to think that the Bishop Garrigan website has been around as long
as most of us, but 2011 marks the school's seventeenth year online. Garrigan was
one of the first schools anywhere with its own website, and ever since the
beginning the site has been created and maintained by students. What sets our
site apart from most other schools is the pictures -- literally thousands of pages
of pictures that show everything that happens here at school.
This all four students-- Victor Berte, Billy Schiltz, Luke Eischen, and Jason
Reding--are working hard each day on the BGHS website. For several years now
staff member David Burrow has served as webmaster, and he's uploaded hundreds of
changes just since the beginning of the school year. You can even listen to the

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Lizzy Hohmeister. Here to tell you
about her is Bethany Capesius.
Lizzy Hohmeister is an Algona native who is active in lots of different things.
She's on the volleyball team, and she also enjoys dance and baton. Lizzy has won
awards in speech and drama, and she also enjoys making artistic creations. When
she's not at school you might see her working at the Market in downtown Algona.
She plans to study nursing in college, and we wish her all the best in the
future.
Thanks, ! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's a JV volleyball
tournament at Algona today, and the freshman volleyball team is playing at
Fenton. Also the Garrigan girls who swim for Algona have a meet at Charles City
today.
Tomorrow is the Parish Families Against Hunger carnival. There's also the CYO
volleyball tournament, which will be held at Gehlen High School in LeMars.
There's no school at Garrigan or Seton on Monday. All the teachers will be in
Carroll for the Diocesan Ministries Conference. That night the cross-country
team runs in Humboldt.
Tuesday is the final day for the calendar drive, and we all hope we make our
goals. Wednesday there's mass in the morning, and we'll have an early dismissal
for teacher inservice. Then Thursday the volleyball team hosts Eagle Grove.
Next Friday the football team plays Northwood--Kensett. That game marks the first
anniversary of the death of Deacon Bob Larsen, and we'll all be keeping Deacon
and his family in our prayers that day.
