Good morning! I'm Rosalind Kirsch!
I'm Jeff Hellman!
And I'm Autumn Thompson! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
It's quiz bowl time again. Just a few minutes ago twenty-four Garrigan students left for the Eagle Grove Invitational, the second largest quiz bowl tournament of the regular season. Garrigan has four teams entered in the contest. John Kohlhaas is the first of the team captains. His teammates include national veterans David Murphy and Matt Courtney, as well as Jeff Hellman, Mike Blocker, and Autumn Thompson.
The second BGHS team has Andrew Missal as its captain. Andrew's teammates are freshmen Noah Devine, Brandon Rowley, Jacob Hellman, Bridget Doughan, and Joe Rahm. Drew Miller is the third team captain. Playing along with him are Mason Elbert, Josh Broesder, Scott Stence, Kris Sutter, and John Stetzel. Rounding out Garrigan's entries is the fourth team with captain Tyler Rolling. Tyler's team consists of Amber Golwitzer, Jacob Richter, Amanda Golwitzer, Seth Rogers, and Jeff Lappe. Good luck to all the Golden Bears competing in quiz bowl.
Last Sunday we began the annual intramural basketball competition. The first game of the season brought a little bit of an upset, when a team mostly made up of juniors with Miles Berte as its captain beat a group of senior athletes headed up by Mark McGregor. Tomorrow the action continues. At 12:30 Jesse Studer's team will take on Ben Geelan's team. Then Brandon Stone and his friends will challenge Keshar Nadkarni and the senior girls. In the final game of the day Mark McGregor's team will try to pick up their first win when they face Jon Hanig's team. Good luck to the intramuralers.
The Garrigan speech students have been busy getting ready for district large-group contest. Some of the selections will be familiar to people who saw the big extravaganza last fall. Among them is a one-act play called "The Last Touchy-Feely Drama on the American Stage", where Jeff Hellman, Keshar Nadkarni, and John Kohlhaas play sportscasters who are giving the play-by-play of a really bad stage drama featuring David Murphy and Eric Cassmann as the actors. There's also "Sure Thing", an ensemble acting scene where Sterven Kellner and Autumn Thompson investigate how life would be if you could keep replaying things until you got them right.
Another of this year's speech selections is a choral reading of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". John Kohlhaas plays the evil green grinch, and Rose Mayer stars as Cindy Lou Who. Others in the cast are Sylvia Weber, Melissa Vaske, Katelyn Besch, Nicole Reding, Beth Becker, Nettie McGuire, Brianne Donahe, Brooke Myers, and Renee Taphorn. Another good piece is the readers' theatre "Sergeant Peter Best's Lonely Harts Club", which tells about life from the perspective of students applying for a scholarship. The cast includes Sarah Erdman, Autumn Thompson, Janel Richter, Sarah Schmitt, Amanda Wolf, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, and Josh Broesder. Contest is next Saturday, and we'll tell you about the rest of the entries on next week's show.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Nick Dahlhauser and Beth Becker.
Nick Dahlhauser is a Whittemore native whose biggest activity is probably quiz bowl. His teammates will tell you that Nick always surprises people by knowing things nobody else knows. Nick also enjoys working with technology, and he has helped on the tech crew for plays and concerts. He'll be off to college next fall, and we wish Nick all the best.
Beth Becker comes to Garrigan from Wesley. She enjoys speech, drama, and choir, and over the years she's been active in any number of plays and concerts. You may have even heard Beth announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Beth will also be at college next year. Good luck to both Beth and Nick.
Thanks! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's quiz bowl today at Eagle Grove. Then tomorrow we'll have more intramural basketball action.
Second semester begins on Monday. That night the freshman basketball teams play at Emmetsburg. Then Tuesday night the varsity Bears travel to Webster City. Wednesday there's freshman and JV basketball. The girls will be at home, while the boys play on the road.
Thursday we'll have no school at Garrigan. That's partially due to a faculty in-service and partly our reward for meeting the goal in the magazine drive last fall.
Next Friday the basketball Bears play at Eagle Grove. Then on Saturday there's a math contest at Iowa Falls and the district large group speech contest at Spencer.
Finally this week we'd like to extend our sympathy to the family of math teacher and "Bear Facts" producer David Burrow. Mr. Burrow's nephew Josh died tragically in southern Iowa last weekend. Some of us at Garrigan knew Josh because he helped out at our quiz bowl tournament. He also came to several baseball and football games to cheer on the Bears. We'll keep Josh and the Burrow family in our thoughts and prayers.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week to hear more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
