Good morning! I'm Bob Brandenburg!
And I'm Chris "Flounder" Kohlhaas! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today is the biggest day of the year for the Golden Bear speech team. Twenty-two Garrigan entries are competing today at the state individual speech contest in Fort Dodge. Each of the state entries received a Division I rating at district contest last month, and we hope there are also lots of I's today at state.
Junior Michael Loebach will begin the day for Garrigan, as he presents his Acting selection "Anybody Want My Sister?" Next up are two poetry presentations--Lynn Kohlhaas with "A Pizza, a Party, and a Moonlight Ride" and Nicole Elbert with a humorous version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Then Sarah Schmitt will be acting out "I Want to Say Something about Parents" and Chris Kohlhaas will perform his after-dinner address on "Fly Etermination".
Amanda Freking is up next, telling the story of "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". Then Janet Kramer will read the prose selection "Dearest Mom". At 9:30 this morning Jake Kohlhaas performs in Spontaneous Speaking--a difficult category where he has just two minutes to prepare a speech on a current events topic. After that Tyler Struck competes in Radio News Announcing. At 10:15 Angie Kohlhaas will tell the story "The Elephant's Child", and then at 11:30 Chris Kohlhaas will compete in Improvisational Acting.
Also at 11:30, Bob Brandenburb will be giving an after-dinner address on what's right (and wrong) with Iowa. Meanwhile Marian Studer and Rachel Foth will give the prose readings "I Fall in Love" and "The Bride and the Butcher". The afternoon will start off with Amanda Freking's Literary Proigram "Journeys", followed by Bob Brandenburg's acting selection "Lamentations of a Teenager".
At 1pm, Jake Kohlhaas will compete in Improvisational Acting--where contestants have just five minutes to create a humorous scene based on two random characters and an absurd situation. Later this afternoon David Murphy will be acting out "Football vs. Romance" and Tyler Struck will tell the story "The Unicorn in the Garden".
Tony Detrick competes in Improvisational Acting at 2:30 this afternoon. At 3:00, Mandy Rahm will be presenting her prose selection "The Motor-sickle Gang", and the day finishes off at 3:15 with Angie Kohlhaas' poem "The Organ Master". Best wishes to Coaches Mary McCall and David Burrow and all the speech contestants. Break a leg, everybody!
There's just one more week of rehearsals before the big Garrigan spring play. Next Thursday and Friday, March 23 and 24, you can see "The World We Live In", a modern presentation that uses insects as a metaphor for modern society. Fr. Paul Eisele is directing the play, which features almost thirty different Garrigan Students. Showtime will be next Thursday and Friday at 7:30 in Friedmann Auditorium.
It's been a long season for intramural basketball, but things are finally winding down. Tomorrow marks the end of the regular season, and next week the intramural play-offs begin. A team of juniors featuring Chad Mescher, Steven Courtney, Nick Even, Andy Pierson, Chase Johnson, and Scott Black has clinched the first seed in the play-offs, with a perfect 6-0 regular season record. They'll be challenged by Eric Becker's team and Drew Hellman's team for the coveted intramural championship.
Joe Mayer is the top intramural scorer, with 150 points for the six-game regular season. Other top scorers include Justin Frideres, Steven Courtney, Dan Bormann, Chad Mescher, Paul Loebach, Ben Meyer, Adam Rahm, Greg Besch, and Josh Forburger. The all-girls' team we told you about earlier in the season hasn't won any games, but they have had fun and scored some points. Mandy Roethler and Kelly Kunkel are among the top scorers for the girls. Good luck in play-offs to all the intramural basketball teams!
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Jennifer Reinhart and Angie Weber.
Jenny Reinhart won the DAR Good Citizenship Award. Among her many activities are quiz bowl (where she traveled to the National Academic Championships) and music (where she's won awards in both band and choir). Jenny is a volleyball manager, and she's also active in Spanish club and pep club. Jenny will be a college girl next fall, and we wish her all the best.
Angie Weber is a Bancroft native who is probably best known for her work in music and art. She has also been successful in drama, and you may have heard her announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Angie would like to attend the University of Iowa next year, and we wish her the very best of luck.
Thanks, Bob. On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's the state speech contest today. We encourage everyone to head down to Ft. Dodge Senior High to listen to all the Garrigan entries.
Tomorrow is the last day of the regular season for intramurals. Then tomorrow night we'll have the boys' basketball awards potluck at the K.C. Hall.
All next week there will be danz squad try-outs for the 2000-2001 season. Tuesday night the area school improvement committee meets, followed by a school board meeting.
Wednesday a group of student council members will be heading for LeMars for a leadership conference. Then next Thursday and Friday you can catch "The World We Live In"--the Y2K Garrigan spring play.
Finally this week we'd like to congratulate Seton eighth-grader John Kohlhaas, who recently won a trip to Washington, D.C. as a part of the United States mathematics team. Congratulations to John, and to his dad, Garrigan math teacher Daryl Kohlhaas!
And that wraps up the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to catch us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
