"The   Bear   Facts"

NOVEMBER 18, 2000

Good morning! I'm Sarah Schmitt!

And I'm Jeff Hellman! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts"-the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last Tuesday twenty-one Garrigan students were inducted into the BGHS chapter of the National Honor Society. NHS is an organization that honors excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service. In order to qualify for National Honor Society, students have to first of all get good grades. Then they fill out an application telling why they should be selected. A committee of faculty and staff members weeded the applicants, and those who made the cut were honored at a special ceremony Tuesday afternoon. Congratulations to them!

Thirteen juniors were among the honorees. They include Algona natives Jenna Becker, Mindy Buscher, and Rebecca McGuire; as well as Luke DeWaard, Adam Rahm, and Mandy Rahm-all of whom are from Wesley. Bancroft natives Ashley Schiltz, Cathy Hellman, and Jeff Vaske were honored; as were Michael Loebach and Jill Goodman from Whittemore. The other juniors inducted into National Honor Society were Ashley Arndorfer from Corwith and Stephanie Hilbert of Livermore.

Eight seniors also signed the roll book for NHS last Tuesday. Six of the seniors were from the Algona area: Heather Stence, Molly Meyer, Ben Licteig, Kelly Kunkel, Jennifer Faber, and Scott Black. Also inducted were Brooke Buscherfeld of Whittemore and Stephanie Berte from Livermore. They joined second-year members like Tanya Broesder, Nick Even, Chris Thilges, Marian Studer, Ellie Reising, Sara Seeley, Amanda Freking, and Angie Kohlhaas. Rounding out the NHS members are Deanna Kohlhaas, Sara Reding, Brad Nelson, Lynn Kohlhaas, Sara Kollasch, Andrea Kramer, Scott McGuire, Annette Long, Paul Loebach, and Janet Kramer.

Several of the National Honor Society members were up early this morning. They're in Orange City today for the Little Dutch Quiz Bowl at MOC-Floyd Valley High School. Angie Kohlhaas is captain of the Bears' varsity team. Joining her in Orange City are Bob Brandenburg, Rebecca McGuire, Mike McAlpine, and Mandy Rahm. Garrigan also has a JV team entered. It features captain Jeff Hellman, as well as John Kohlhaas, Ellie Reising, Amber Golwitzer, and Brooke Buscherfeld. We wish good luck to our quiz bowl team!

The Garrigan publications students have been busy through the past two months selling ads for the yearbook. Ad sales have been going well, and they will be continuing through the rest of the fall. Kelly Kunkel, Michelle Vitzthum, and Brooke Buscherfeld are this year's publications editors. They help produce the monthly "Paw Prints" , which appears as an insert in the Algona newspaper-as well as the annual "Garrigold" yearbook. Miss Mary McCall is in charge of the publications program at Garrigan.

As a special Thanksgiving sacrifice this year, Garrigan students will be donating canned and boxed goods to the Kossuth Food Pantry. We'll be bringing food to school next Wednesday, when we have our annual Thanksgiving mass. That afternoon student council members will be taking the food to the pantry, in the hopes of making the holidays and the winter season a bit more manageable for some area families.

Field trips are an important part of our education at Garrigan. Right after Thanksgiving, two different groups will be taking big field trips. English teacher Amanda Stewart will accompany a group of her students to St. Paul, where they will be seeing a live performance of "Romeo and Juliet". That same day, health instructor Jeanne Wunder will be taking a group to Rochester, where they will check out the facilities at the Mayo Clinic. The field trips make a nice diversion from regular classes, as well as teaching things you can't really learn in school.

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Amanda Freking and Kelly Kunkel. Here with the scoop on them is Rosalind Kirsch.

Amanda Freking is a Whittemore native who is active in music, speech, and cheerleading. Amanda is also in Model UN and publications, as well as student council. When she's not at Garrigan, you might see her working at the Ampride convenience store in Whittemore. Amanda wants to attend a small private college, and we wish her all the best in the future.

Dance is an important part of Kelly Kunkel's life. She has won state and national awards in drill team, and she teaches dance to younger girls. Kelly is a National Honor Society member who is also one of this year's publications editors. She'll also be off to college next year. Good luck, Kelly!

Thanks, Rosalind! Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, we've got two weeks of events on our Golden Bear calendar. Today there's quiz bowl in Orange City. Then next Tuesday is Presentation Day, the feast day of the sisters who serve Garrigan and Seton.

The math department will be writing curriculum on Tuesday, and that night the girls' basketball team begins their season at Sentral. Wednesday morning we'll have our Thanksgiving mass, and we'll be dismissing at 2:15 Wednesday afternoon to start the holiday weekend.

On Sunday the 26th the boys' basketball team will serve a waffle breakfast at the Rochleau Center. Then on Monday the 27th we'll have English students in St. Paul and health students in Rochester for field trips.

On Tuesday, the 28th there's boys' basketball versus Sentral and girls' basketball at Humboldt. Wednesday the freshman boys travel to Estherville, and then Friday the 1st there's state drill team, and the varisty Bears will be hosting Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Model UN will be serving a supper at the St. Ed's game.

That's the "Bear Facts" for November. We'll be off next weekend for the holiday, but we want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, and we hope you'll all join us in December for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
