Facts", your weekly radio update on all the news from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
It's speech season once again, and today a busload of Garrigan students are down in Fort Dodge for the district large group speech contest. Among the Bears' entries is a one-act play called "The Wildflowering of Chastity ... or Chaste across the Stage". This melodrama features Mike Loebach is typecast as the evil villain, Rebecca McGuire as the pure and innocent young maiden, and Bob Brandenburg as the bumbling hero. Other characters include Rachel Foth as a drunken Auntie Absinthe, Andrea Schiltz as wicked
city woman Violet Nightshade, Mandy Rahm as Sheriff Tinfoil, and Sarah Schmitt as Melody
BoPeep.
Another big speech piece is the choral reading "Rinse the Blood off My Toga", which turns the murder of Julius Caesar into comedy. Chris Kohlhaas plays Flavius, who is modeled on a 1930s detective, and Steven Kellner is Brutus. Another central character is Caesar's whining wife Calpurnia, who is played by Rosalind Kirsch. Rounding out the cast are Jenna Hansen, David Rasmussen, Rachel McGuire, Christoph Gebele, Amber Golwitzer, and Beth Becker.
The third big speech piece is a readers' theatre called "The Mad Breakfast", where residents at a boarding house pretend they are in an insane asylum. Adam Rahm and Kim Frideres set up the scheme, as they try to convince Jeff Hellman that everyone is crazy. Rachel Foth is the head of the boarding house, and the other residents include Jenna Hansen, Keshar Nadkarni, Amanda wolf, Melissa Vaske, John Kohlhaas, and Maria Paterson.
Garrigan will also present four ensemble acting selections at contest. The first is called "Deliver Us Not ... or Birth, Where Is Thy Sting?" It is a parody of after-death experiences that features three fetuses in a womb pondering what it will being born is going to be like. The fetuses are Rebecca McGuire, Mandy Rahm, and Bob Brandenburg. Another ensemble is the classic "Anne of Green Gables", which includes Autumn Thompson as Anne, Brooke Myers as Marilla, and Josh Broesder as Matthew.
"My Gypsy Robe" is centered around five show girls getting ready for a performance. The actresses in that show are Keshar Nadkarni, Amber Golwitzer, Sarah Erdman, Sarah Schmitt, and Cassie Recker. The final ensemble is "Bubbles Goes to School", where an elegant mother tries to get her bratty young daughter into an exclusive school. Kristi Reding is Bubbles, Amanda Thompson is her mother, and Brianne Donahe plays Miss Shrewsbury.
The final event Garrigan is entered in at contest is Group Improvisation, where groups draw a situation and have just two minutes to decide what they will do to act it out. There will be four BGHS improv groups. The first features Christoph Gebele, Eric Cassman, Josh Broesder, Steven Kellner, and Rosie Kirsch. Group #2 includes Adam Rahm, Mark Rasmussen, Chris Kohlhaas, Cassie Recker, and Brooke Myers. The third improv group is made up of Sylvia Weber, Andrea Schiltz, Michael Loebach, David Murphy, and Kim Frideres; and the final group consists of Kristi Reding, Brianne Donahe, and Amanda Thompson.
Speech contest runs all day long at Fort Dodge Senior High. Garrigan's first event, "The Mad Breakfast", is on right now, and the entries are scattered all through the day with the last group, "Bubbles Goes to School" at 4:10 this afternoon. Admission is free at speech contest, so we encourage everyone to head down to Fort Dodge to see the Bears. All the events will also be performed on Monday night, January 28, at the annual Evening of Theatre.
Intramural basketball started last weekend, with four big games. In the highest-scoring match, Scott Miller's team obliterated Mason Elbert's team by a score of 164 to 50. In another game, Mark McGregor's team led Stephanie Hilbert's team by as few as two points just before halftime, but they went on to double-up the girls 46 - 23. In other action, Zac McGuire's team edged past Jim Garman's team 40 - 35, while Ben Meyer's team pummeled Jason Lallier's team 93 - 49. Intramurals continue tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Emily O'Kane. Here to tell you all about her is
Bob Brandenburg.
Emily O'Kane is an Algona native who enjoys number-crunching classes like math and accounting. Her favorite activity is
track, and she also enjoys intramural basketball. When she's not at school, you'll see her either
working or hanging out with her friends. Emily plans to major in business at college next year, and we wish her all the best.
On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's the district speech contest today at Fort Dodge. Tomorrow intramurals continue, and then Monday there's JV and C-Team basketball at North Kossuth.
Tuesday the basketball Bears face Algona High, with the lower level games across town and the varsity here at Garrigan. Wednesday the boys C-team takes on Algona, and that night there's also auditions for the annual Pops Concert.
Next Thursday we'll have a jeans day to raise money for the student gift for Gala 2002. Then next Friday there's C-team basketball versus Humboldt here, while the varsity Bears play at Webster City.
