And I'm Jill Johnson! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
It's time once again for Prom, 2002. Things have gone so fast this spring that it's hard to believe that Prom is already here, but Mrs. Kollasch and the juniors have been working hard all week to get things ready for the biggest dance of the year. This year's prom theme is "A Knight's Tale", and as always the public is invited to view the Grand March around 9pm. After prom the junior parents will be sponsoring the traditional after-prom party, which will keep things hopping all night long.
This is the second week in a row that we've had a big party in the Garrigan gym. Last weekend was Gala, and with all the proceeds counted it looks like this year's fundraiser was one of the best ever. All together the school took in $192,000 on Gala 2002. Part of that money will go to endowment, to ensure that Catholic education continues in Algona well into the future. Part goes to special projects at Garrigan and Seton, and part helps to pay the day-to-day bills. A big thanks to everyone who helped to make Gala 2002 another big success!
Right before Gala some of the top BGHS students were in Cedar Falls. They were there for the Great Plains Math League state competition. Nine Garrigan math whizzes competed at state, and when all the tests were scored, junior Jeff Hellman ended up qualifying for the Midwest regional competition, which will be held next month in Kansas City. Sophomore John Kohlhaas and freshman Matt Courtney also took home state math trophies, and the team just missed qualifying for regionals as a group. Congratulations to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the math team!
Many of those same students were competing again Wednesday, when the quiz bowl team took part in the spring Knowledge Master Open. Knowledge Master is a computer-based quiz game, and schools all over America compete. Even though some of their top players were unable to compete, Garrigan ended up with an above average score of 1,056 points. Working together as a group were John Kohlhaas, Scott Stence, Josh Broesder, Dae Soen Lee, Chris Kohlhaas, Eric Cassman, David Murphy, Jeff Hellman, Rachel McGuire, Rebecca McGuire, Adam Rahm, Rebecca McGuire, and Mandy Rahm. Congratulations to them and to Coach David Burrow.
The girls' track team had an outstanding week. Last Tuesday at Garner they won the meet, something that doesn't happen very often in track. Their 125 team points included seven first-place finishes, despite the strong winds. Jenna Becker was first in the shot put, Ashley Arndorfer won the long jump, and Rose Mayer was tops in the 800-meter race. The Bears also won four relays-thanks to good running by Hannah McCall, Jenna Becker, Ashley Arndorfer, Shelly DeVries, Lindsey Becker, Janel Richter, Lisa Thilges, and Jenna Kollasch. Congratulations, girls!
The boys track team has also been running well. According to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas the core of this year's team includes sprinters Luke DeWaard, Lee Elbert, and Justin Fickbohm; Greg Fowler, Scott Stence and Joe Hellman at middle distance; and distance Runners John Kohlhaas, Matt Studer, and Jeff Hellman. Brian Welp is the team's top hurdler. In field events, Andy Kardoes and Mark Steier are throwing discus, Mark McGregor is the top shot putter, Lee Elbert is the team's best long jumper, and Joe Hellman leads the team in the high jump. Good luck to the boys' track team!
This weekend is the key event time for another group of Garrigan students. Thursday a group left for Cedar Falls for the annual Model United Nations. This year Garrigan is representing the Middle Eastern nations of Jordan and Yemen, and with the tensions in that part of the world at the moment, it should make for an interesting time. We wish the best to everyone in Model UN.

You heard Hannah McCall's name a minute ago when we talked about the girls track team's big win last week. Hannah is a great runner, and she's also active in other sports. Last winter she was part of the intramural basketball excitement. She'll be off to college in the fall, and we wish her all the best.
Kristy Boever's top activity is probably publications, where she enjoys working on the yearbook and the monthly Paw Prints newspaper page. Kristy also enjoys health classes and spending time with her friends. She'll also be continuing her education after high school. Good luck, Kristy!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, Model UN wraps up today in Cedar Falls. The boys golf team competes in the Algona Invitational this morning. Then tonight it's time for "A Knight's Tale" at Prom Night, 2002!
Monday the golf teams face Clarion-Goldfield. Then Tuesday there's the North Central Conference art show at Clear Lake. The boys track team runs in the E-Hawk Relays at Estherville that night, and there's girls golf at Humboldt.
There's also girls track at Forest City on Tuesday. Wednesday the golf teams play Hampton-Dumont, while the girls track team runs at Humboldt. Then Thursday there's the speech awards potluck.
Next Friday an expert from Clarke College will be working with the BGHS choir. That night there's boys track at Hampton, girls golf vs. Clear Lake, and boys golf at Humboldt.
