And I'm Mike Reel! You're listening to the "Bear Facts," where each week we keep you in touch with all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The Garrigan girls are moving up! Tuesday they won the district opener 58-41 against Belmond/Klemme to advance in play-offs. Their next game is tonight, when they'll be facing Garner/Hayfield for the district championship. If they win tonight, they'll advance to the regional competition next Tuesday. While the girls will be the visiting team on the scoreboard, they'll still have a home court advantage, since they're playing right here in Friedmann Auditorium. We encourage everyone to come out and cheer the Golden Bear girls on to victory.
The girls aren't the only success story in the past week. Last Saturday senior Phil Kramer wrestled in the sectional tournament at Pocahontas. While he didn't advance, he made a very respectable showing. Phil lost his first match, but then came back to finish in fourth place overall in the tournament. That's not bad for a one-man team. Congratulations, Phil!
The Golden Bear quiz bowl team ended up in third place out of fourteen teams in their division at the Little Dutch Invitational Quiz Bowl at MOC/Floyd Valley High School in Orange City. The team was undefeated in the preliminary rounds, but they eventually lost to Unity Christian in the semi-finals. Sophomore Lynn Kohlhaas was the team captain, and her teammates included Paul Loebach, Angie Kohlhaas, and Rebecca McGuire.
Because of that big girls' play-off game tonight, the benefit for Diane Kohlhaas and Melissa McGuire has been postponed to tomorrow evening. The meal will start at 4pm, with the auction following at 7. Both Melissa and Mrs. Kohlhaas are important members of the extended family of people associated with our school, and we encourage all of you to come to the KC Hall tomorrow to support this special benefit.
We've been working here at school to raise some money for Melissa and her family as she recovers from her accident. We had a special jeans day last Thursday, where many students paid more than the single dollar they had to in order to wear jeans. The student council is also giving the profits from this year's computer compatability match-up to help Melissa in her recovery. That takes a project that's pretty much just for fun and turns it into something that can lend a helping hand.
The results are back from that compatability match-up. This week we've been forking over dollar bills to find out who everyone is the most and least compatable with. There were some predictable results--like a certain state cross-country champion who must have filled out the survey together with his girlfriend. Then there's other so-called "ideal matches" where only the computer seems to find anything in common.
In addition to the compatability lists, we also got a list of how people answered overall on each of the survey questions. We found out that people are completely split on their favorite type of music. Every possibility got votes, and rock, rap, and country all nearly tied for first place. When it comes to who pays for a date, most people were fairly traditional. The majority felt that even if a girl asks a guy out, it's the boy who should pay for things. People were about evenly split on where they want to live in the future. "Small town" was the number one response, but "big city" and "in the country" were both close behind.
Then there was the wrestling question, an original creation of a few members of this year's sophomore class. When people were asked who their favorite wrestler was, the results were mixed. Overall, three answers were almost dead even. The number one response was "I hate wrestling", followed closely by Garrigan's own "Phil Kramer" and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Brent Berte and Lynn Frideres.
Brent Berte is one of the select group of Garrigan students who comes to Algona from the St. Joe area. The one activity Brent is involved in outside of school is intramural basketball, where he has scored twenty-two points so far on the team we officially call "Team A". We wish "Berte Kid" or "Bird Dog" the very best of luck in the future.
Lynn Frideres is an Algona native who also has one main activity. For her, it's publications. She's one of the hardworking group who puts out the Paw Prints newspaper and the Garrigold yearbook. If you're at a school event, you just might see her snapping pictures. Lynn will be off to college next year, and we wish her the very best.
On the Golden Bear calendar for today, there's the girls' district final game tonight at 7:00. All the action takes place right here at Garrigan.
Tomorrow morning the juniors will receive the Rite of Continuing Conversion at their parish masses. Then intramurals continue tomorrow afternoon.
Monday it's the boys' turn to enter district action. The Golden Bears will take on Britt West Hancock, and again we're hosting. The place to be is Friedmann Auditorium.
Tuesday is the girls' regional semi-finals, and we certainly hope the girls will be playing ball that night. Then on Wednesday we're again hosting district basketball. If the boys win on Monday, they'll face either Emmetsburg or Pocahontas that night.
Next Thursday about twenty-five Garrigan musicians will head to Storm Lake for the Diocesan Band Festival. Then Friday or Saturday, it's the girls' regional finals, where the winner earns the right to play at state.
Finally next Saturday, Garrigan will host yet another district contest. This time it's district speech, with BGHS serving as the host school for the twelfth straight year.
