Today about thirty Golden Bears are in Fort Dodge for the district large group
speech contest. The competition begins today with the ensemble acting selection "Victoria at 18", which includes Sarah Schmitt as a Duchess, Sarah Erdman as a Baroness, Jeff Hellman as a Lord Archbishop, Kim Frideres as Flora and Constance, and Keshar Nadkarni as Victoria. When They're done, another ensemble called "But Listen" goes on. That group includes Bob Brandenburg as Nick, Mandy Rahm as Richie, Amanda Freking as Helen, and Angie Kohlhaas as Kim. In ensemble acting, contestants have 15 minutes to act out a scene from a play, without any costumes or scenery.
At 9:00 this morning, Garrigan's first Readers' Theatre performs. The show is called "A Memory of Harold", and it includes Jenna Hansen, Maria Paterson, Beth Becker, Rebecca McGuire, Tony Schmitt, Michael Loebach, Steven Kellner, and Rosie Kirsch. After that another Readers' Theatre called "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" takes the stage. That show features Melissa Vaske, Brooke Myers, Cassie Recker, Amber Golwitzer, Josh Broesder, and John Kohlhaas. In Readers' Theatre, each group reads through a play-using their voices and facial expression to convey the author's emotion.
One of the most popular speech areas is Group Improvisation, where contestants are given a situation, and they have to make up a scene to act out without any preparation. Garrigan has four improv groups. The first consists of Sarah Schmitt, Kim Frideres, David Murphy, Chris Kohlhaas, and Rosie Kirsch. Group 2 includes Mark Rasmussen, Michael Loebach, Zac Lickteig, Andrea Schiltz, and Sylvia Weber. The third entry in group improvisation is made up of Lynn Kohlhaas, Jennifer Faber, Sarah Kollasch, Ellie Reising, and Steven Kellner. Finally there's a freshman entry, including Brooke Myers, Josh Broesder, John Kohlhaas, and Amber
Golwitzer.
After a lunch break, another ensemble acting selection will go on. This is and updated version of "The Ugly Duckling", and it features Adam Rahm as the counselor, Mark Rasmussen as the king, Autumn Thompson as the queen, and Andrea Schiltz as the princess. At the same time you can see the choral reading of Dr. Seuss' "You're Only Old Once"-with Marian Studer, Chris Kohlhaas, Mandy Rham, Sylvia Weber, Rachel Foth, Rebecca McGuire, and Amanda Wolf mixing their voices to enhance the presentation.
The final speech presentation of the day is the One Act Play "Happily Ever After". In One-Act, students perform a short play on stage, complete with scenery, make-up, and props. David Murphy stars at Prince Charming in this show, with Angie Kohlhaas as Cinderella. Ellie Reising and Marian Studer are wicked stepsisters, and Jennifer Faber is Sleeping Beauty. Tony Schmitt is the Frog Prince, and Marian Studer is Snow White. Amanda Freking is the Pond Princess, Dan Bormann is the Prince-ling, Lynn Kohlhaas is the Stepmother, and Sarah Kollasch is Ms. Scribe. Tying everything together is Bob Brandenburg, who plays a counselor.
Those entries that receive Division I ratings at today's district contest will advance to the state group speech contest, which will be held February 3 in Sioux City. The public is welcome to watch the speech events free of charge, and we encourage everyone to head down to Ft. Dodge for the contest. Last week a group of Garrigan quiz bowlers headed down to Eagle Grove for one of the most disorganized contests they had ever been to. In spite of the confusion, the Bears did pretty well. Both of Garrigan's teams made the play-offs at Eagle Grove. One team included captain Jeff Hellman, Mandy Rahm, Amber Golwitzer, David Murphy, and Tyler Rolling. They were undefeated in the preliminary rounds, with a perfect 8-0 record, before losing to Boone in play-offs. The other team with Angie, Lynn, Chris, and John Kohlhaas had a 7-2 record for the day.

Dan Bormann is proud to be the Garrigan student with the highest grade point who is not in National Honor
Society. Dan is involved in band and
speech, and he is currently the leading scorer in
intramural
basketball. Next year he plans to attend Iowa
State, where he will be majoring in agriculture. Good luck, Dan!
Sara Seeley is an Algona native who is among the members of the Golden Bear
girls' basketball team. Over the years she has been involved in a lot of activities-from
track and volleyball to music and speech. Sarah would like to go to college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Scott On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's the district large group speech contest in Fort Dodge today. Also this weekend is the Meistersingers Music Festival at Wartburg College in Waverly.
Intramural basketball action continues tomorrow. Then on Monday the freshman Bears play at Algona High.
Tuesday we'll have our winter penance service, which was re-scheduled from a snow day in December. That night the JV and varsity girls play at Algona High.
Wednesday we'll have a jeans day to raise money for the student gift for Gala 2001. Then on Thursday there's an early dismissal for staff development.
Friday there's varsity basketball, with the Bears hosting Webster City. There will be a supper at the games to benefit the boys' basketball teams. Finally next Saturday the quiz bowl team will travel to the University of Iowa.
