Good morning! I'm Stephanie Hilbert!
I'm Jenna Becker!
And I'm Ashley Arndorfer! You're listening to the "Bear
Facts", the radio show where every week we keep you in touch with all the news from
Bishop Garrigan High School.
This past week has been a great week for the Golden Bears. It all started last weekend when the eleventh annual BGHS Quiz Bowl Tournament was held right here at Garrigan. Two Golden Bear teams had perfect 8 - 0 records after the preliminary rounds, and they were seeded first and third going into the play-offs. The team of Adam Rahm, Bob Brandenburg, David Murphy, and Matt Courtney defeated Algona High in the final round to take the third place trophy. Meanwhile Steven Kellner, Rebecca McGuire, John Kohlhaas, and Mandy Rahm just missed the final round and ended up in fifth place overall.
There's more quiz bowl action today. Six Golden Bears are down in Ames this morning for the Cyclone Classic Academic Bowl. Bob Brandenburg will serve as captain today, and playing along with him are Chris Kohlhaas, Matt Courtney, John Kohlhaas, Jacob Richter, and Jordan Kajewski. Good luck to the quiz bowl Bears!
This was also an outstanding week for the Golden Bear volleyball team as they started down the play-off trail. On Monday they clobbered North Iowa in three straight games to win the district opener. Then Wednesday they had another big win over Woden Crystal Lake. Next Monday the Bears will play Britt West Hancock for the district championship. The game will be right here at Garrigan at 7pm in Friedmann Auditorium.
It was also a great week for the other Golden Bear sports teams. Last Friday at Spencer the cross-country team tied the team record for best score that they had set just the week before. Then on Thursday they ran at the district meet in Eagle Grove. Junior Jeff Hellman ran the five-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 50 seconds-his best time of the season. The time was good enough for a seventh place finish and a trip to the state cross-country meet next weekend. The football team also had a good week. They played a good game last night and clinched the district championship and another trip to play-offs.
There's one other big activity today. Four Garrigan students are auditioning for the All-State Music Festival. Junior Autumn Thompson is the lone member of the Solid Gold band who is performing at all-state auditions. Joining her on the trip are juniors Jeff Hellman and Steven Kellner and sophomore Rachel McGuire-all of whom are trying out to become members of the All-State Choir. Good luck to all these top music students!
The BGHS magazine drive began last Thursday. Each year Garrigan students sell subscriptions to popular magazines, as well as selected software, music and books. Forty percent of all the sales go to the Garrigan student council. They use that money for activities like Homecoming and intramurals, and they also give money to other student activities. This year's goal is just over $11,000 in sales, but we're hoping to go way higher than that goal. Magazine sales continue through November 2nd, and we encourage you to renew your subscriptions here at Garrigan.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Joe Bartolo. Joe is an Algona native who is a four-year letterwinner in baseball. He has also lettered in basketball for two straight years, and in the past he was active in track. Away from school you might see Joe working at Fareway. He plans a career in the health field, and next year he wants to major in nursing at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo. Good luck, Joe!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week today the Golden Bear football cheerleaders are taking a team trip. Also today there's the Cyclone Classic Quiz Bowl Tournament at Iowa State University and All-State Music Auditions.
Monday the magazine drive continues. That night Garrigan will host the district volleyball final, as the Bears face Britt West Hancock. Then on Wednesday the sophomores will take the PLAN test.
Next Thursday there's no school at Garrigan or Seton. The teachers will be meeting that day to organize the self-study we're doing as part of our school improvement plan.
Next Friday the first quarter ends. That night the football team will finish their regular season as they take on Clarion-Goldfield. Finally next Saturday the cross-country team runs at state.
That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to join us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
