And I'm John Kohlhaas! Welcome to another episode of the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
This past week was Homecoming at BGHS, and all week long we've been taking "A Five-Day Trip Around the World". The festivities started last Sunday when all four classes put up hallway decorations. The seniors had the winning hall, which they entitled "It's a Small World". The juniors had a jungle theme in their second place hall. The sophomores had decorations from five different points around the globe, and the freshmen hallway had picture postcards that said "Vacation is great ... but Homecoming is better!"
Tuesday night we built floats for the Homecoming parade. The sophomores won the float competition with a depiction of the Egyptian pyramids. The seniors built a globe with landmarks from around the world. The juniors showed a bear ice fishing in the Arctic, and the freshmen float showed a luau in Hawaii. Each class also built hoops for athletes to run through at the Homecoming coronation. The juniors had the top hoop, followed by the seniors, the sophomores, and the freshmen.
Thursday morning we had a special pep rally with all four classes presenting Homecoming skits. The senior skit was by far the best. The juniors and sophomores tied for second place, with the freshmen coming in last. Another part of the class competition was the annual powder puff football game. This year a team of sophomores and juniors defeated the seniors and freshmen to take the powder puff crown.
There was great participation from all four classes for the Homecoming special dress days. Black & Gold Day had 100% participation, and on Jersey Day only one student didn't participate. Almost everyone also donned special clothes for Hawaiian Day, Nerd Day, and Dress-Up Day. All four classes also did a great job cheering at the coronation Wednesday night. The judges made a surprising decision when they gave the spirit award to the sophomore class for the first time that anyone at Garrigan can remember.
Adding to the good spirit at Homecoming is the success all of Garrigan's sports teams have had. Last Friday the football team won back the cross-town bragging rights by beating Class 3-A Algona High--a very good sign as they head into Class 1-A district play. Then the volleyball team won a tournament at Emmetsburg last Saturday. The biggest success, though, comes from the cross-country team. On "Black and Gold Day" the boys team dressed up to spell out "GO XC 52 - 2!" That's because so far this year they've beat teams from fifty-two different schools, while losing to only two schools-both of which were from bigger classes.
Last Saturday the boys brought home two trophies from the same meet when they won both the 1-A title and the CYO championship at the Holstein Invitational. On the girls side freshman Maria Kohlhaas made the All-CYO Team. Then on Tuesday both the boys and girls took the team championships at the Clear Lake Invitational. Sophomore Brandon Rowley finished in first place among all runners at the meet, and both the boys and girls teams set new school records. Congratulations to all the cross-country runners!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on our Homecoming King and Queen, Josh Broesder and Molly Black.
Josh Broesder comes to Garrigan from the Burt area. He's active in choir, speech, drama, and quiz bowl, and he's also proud to be a member of last year's championship intramural basketball team. He's also part of student council and Christian Leadership in Action, and outside of school he's active in 4-H. Josh will be off to college next year, and we wish him all the best.
Molly Black is one of the co-presidents of the Garrigan class of 2004. She's been a cross-country and softball captain, and she also lettered in track. She's on the yearbook staff and also serves in Christian Leadership in Action. Away from Garrigan, you might see Molly working at the Good Samaritan Center. In the future she plans a career in mortuary science. Congratulations to both Molly and Josh, our 2003 Homecoming King and Queen!
On our Golden Bear calendar today, there's JV and varsity volleyball at Algona High and freshman volleyball at North Kossuth. Then Monday the volleyball team hosts Clear Lake.
Also on Monday the cross-country team will run at Humboldt and the freshman and sophomore football players will take on Armstrong/Ringsted.
Wednesday we'll have a special assembly to hear a string quartet. The quartet will have a public concert that night at the Methodist church. Then on Wednesday the volleyball team welcomes Clarion/Goldfield.
Next Friday the football team travels to Burnside to play Southeast Webster. Then on Saturday there's more volleyball, with the Bears playing at Clarion.
