And I'm Jesse Bode! Welcome to another exciting episode of the "Bear Facts", the radio show where each week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Well, it's official. With their victory over Iowa Falls last Tuesday, the Golden Bear boys basketball team won the North Central Conference title. While some have made a big deal of the fact that it's technically a co-championship, no one around here is terribly upset about sharing the honors with another outstanding team. The team has shattered the record for most consecutive wins, and no matter when their season ends, they'll also break the 20-year mark for best overall team record. Just three district wins and they'll tie the "most wins" record established by the 1993 team that went to state.
Garrigan has one of the tougher play-off schedules in the state, but we're hoping they'll advance through things okay. Basketball play-offs begin Monday, when the Bears travel to play Pocahontas. The game is at 8pm at Pocahontas Area High School. After they win that game, they'll move play at Pocahontas again, most likely against Alta. Sibley Ocheyden and Sheldon are the most likely opponents for the district championship on March 2nd at Estherville. If they keep on winning, they'll play the substate game at Spencer, with South O'Brien and Sioux Center among the likely opponents. Good luck to the boys as they head down the play-off trail.
Today twelve of Garrigan's top math students are in Ames competing in a qualifying contest for the Great Plains Math League. John Kohlhaas has already qualified for state in math. Others competing today include senior Scott Stence; juniors Matt Courtney, Samantha Kirsch, and Anthony McGuire; sophomores Gavin Freking, Jeff Lappe, Spenser Rahm, and Kandice Roethler; and freshmen Maria Kohlhaas, Joann Kirsch, and Tony Rouse. Several of Garrigan's math students did very well a week ago when they took the American Mathematics Competition or AMC-12 test. Garrigan will be honored as a "distinguished school" in mathematics, due to the fact that that our top students got excellent scores on this extremely tough test. Senior John Kohlhaas had the top score overall, with 109 points. Sophomore Sepnser Rahm was close behind with 108. Anthony McGuire and Tony Rouse led the junior and freshman classes, each scoring 91 points. Other top scorers included seniors Aaron O'Kane, David Rasmussen, Cassie Recker, and Jesse Bode; juniors Samantha Kirsch and Theresa Reising; sophomores Jeff Lappe and Andrew Missal; and freshman Maria Kohlhaas. Congratulations to the math students on their achievement.
District individual speech contest is just a week away. For the twentieth straight year Garrigan will be hosting district contest, and we're hoping that the "home court" advantage will help our speech students to do their best. The Bears will have twenty-three entries at district contest. Among the students competing are Jacob Hellman, Eric Cassmann, Amber Golwitzer, John Kohlhaas, Brandon Rowley, Cassie Recker, Jesse Bode, and Samantha Kirsch. Also on the speech team are Nancy Syharath, Josh Broesder, Brooke Myers, Amanda Golwitzer, Sadie Foertsch, and Kathy Preylowski. Rounding out the group are Chris Loebach, Logan Wood, Alex Elbert, Garrison Brosnan, Anna Bormann, and JoAnn Kirsch. Good luck to Coaches Mary McCall and Sarah Freking, and the speech team!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Nettie McGuire and Sarah Mayer. Here to tell you about them is Josh Broesder.
Nettie McGuire plays basketball, and when she's not on the court she runs cross-country. She has a beautiful voice when she sings in a cappella choir. She is in National Honor Society and Christian Leadership in Action, and she is also works at the Good Samaritan Center and is a Y-Pal. We know Nettie will continue to be active after high school, and we wish her all the best.
Sarah Mayer is also involved in National Honor Society and Christian Leadership in Action. Away from school she works at the scoreboard and enjoys driving her car. Sarah likes to collect purses. She will be at Iowa State next year, where she plans to major in interior design. Good luck, Sarah!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's the Great Plains Math League contest today in Ames. Tomorrow the regular season wraps up for intramural basketball.
Monday the boys basketball team opens district play. The game will be at 8pm in Pocahontas. The calendar's open on Tuesday, and then Wednesday we'll start off Lent with an Ash Wednesday service at St. Cecelia's.
Thursday a group of Personal Bookkeeping students will be visiting Iowa State Bank, and that night the boys play their second round of districts.
Friday we'll have a jeans day for the student gift for Gala. Then next Saturday Garrigan will host the district speech contest.
