And I'm Jeff Hellman! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Last Saturday the BGHS quiz bowl team had one of their best days ever as they hosted the 10th Annual Bishop Garrigan quiz bowl tournament. Sixty-six teams were registered for the tournament, representing schools from all across northern Iowa. Several of the schools-including Garrigan-had more than one team entered. After four preliminary games in the morning, the top sixteen teams advanced to the afternoon play-offs. Most years the Bears have advanced one team to the play-offs, and sometimes a couple of Golden Bear teams have gone on. This year, though, the Garrigan set a record by advancing no less than four teams to the sweet sixteen.
One of the play-off teams nicknamed themselves "Team Jock"-and you may recognize a lot of their names from baseball or football. Ben Lickteig was the captain of that team, and playing with him were Scott McGuire, Adam Rahm, and Paul Loebach. Another very successful team featured just freshmen and sophomores-including Captain John Kohlhaas, Eric Fouarge, Mike Blocker, Amber Golwitzer, and Jesse Bode. The second-best Golden Bear team advanced to the quarter-finals before falling to the eventual champions from Algona High. They included Captain Angie Kohlhaas, Steven Kellner, Lynn Kohlhaas, Rebecca McGuire, and Bob Brandenburg.
The Bears' top team went all the way to the final round. They eventually fell to Humboldt and took the fourth place trophy. No one was complaining about that, though, since this was the first time in six years that Garrigan kept a trophy at their home tournament. Chris Missal was captain of the trophy-winning team. His teammates included Josh Richter, Tony Schmitt, David Murphy, and Chris Kohlhaas. Congratulations to them and to everyone on the Golden Bear quiz bowl team for their outstanding showing last weekend.
The Golden Bear cross-country team finished up their season last Thursday at the district meet in Eagle Grove. Sophomores Matt Studer and Jeff Hellman led the Garrigan boys' team, finishing 11th and 20th among some very tough district competition. Earlier in the week Matt and Jeff both medalled at the Spencer Invitational, as did freshman John Kohlhaas. On the girls' side, Angie Kohlhaas holds the new senior record, with a time of 12 minutes, 52 seconds for the two-mile course. She also tied Ruby Bode's all-time medal mark by racking up 15 medals over her career. Congratulations to all the cross-country runners for finishing up another grueling season!
Today seven Garrigan students are in Hampton to audition for the All-State Music Festival. Angie Kohlhaas will be trying to make the all-state band for her work on the clarinet. Meanwhile her brother John Kohlhaas is auditioning in percussion, while Autumn Thompson is trying out for All-State on the french horn. In vocal music, Molly Black, Jeff Hellman, Steven Kellner, and Zac Lickteig are all trying out for the All-State Choir. Good luck in their auditions to all these outstanding Garrigan music students.
Garrigan's publications students have been very busy the past couple weeks. They've just finished selling ads for the 2001 Garrigold yearbook. They also chose the cover for next year's yearbook, and they just put out this year's first edition of the Paw Prints newspaper. Yearbooks are on sale right now at Garrigan for $35, and we're sure next year's yearbook will be another great log our school's history.
Next Thursday we'll be starting the annual BGHS magazine drive. Hundreds of the most popular magazines are available at the lowest prices you'll find anywhere. Forty cents of every dollar you spend for magazines stays right here at Garrigan, where the Student Council uses it to help out all kinds of student activities. The magazine drive will continue through Tuesday, November 7. So throw out those renewal notices, and save big money by buying your magazines right here at Garrigan.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Heather Stence and Tim Kohlhaas. Here to tell you about them is Joe Hellman.
Heather Stence is an Algona native who has been active in many of the activities at Garrigan. She's probably made the biggest mark in sports, where she was one of the top cross-country and track runners-not to mention a being a good basketball player. Heather works hard in the classroom, and we know she'll be doing well at college next year.
Tim Kohlhaas comes to Garrigan from the LuVerne area. Tim is a lineman who is one of the toughest players on the Golden Bear football team. In winter you'll see him on the basketball floor. Tim will be off to college next year, and we wish both him and Heather the very best of luck.
Thanks, Joe! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's All-State music auditions today in Hampton. Then tomorrow Ron Patterson will receive his "Teacher of the Year" award at the annual Bishop's dinner in Sioux City.
Monday there's freshman and sophomore football versus St. Edmond. Then next Wednesday sophomores will be taking the PLAN test.
Thursday is the magazine drive kick-off. We'll also have picture re-takes that morning. Then next Friday the Golden Bear football team will finish the regular season by hosting Clarion-Goldfield.
