The Bear Facts
November 22, 2008

Good morning! I'm Anna Kollasch!

And I'm Michael Hellman! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts". Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

The Golden Bear quiz bowl team has had a great season so far this year, and that continued last weekend when they competed in Orange City. The Bears ended up taking second and third place awards in two separate divisions. Vince Cruise, Brittany Berte, Jake Rosenmeyer, Michael Hellman, and Alex Hamilton took home second place medals. Over the course of the day they scored more points than any other team in the tournament, but they were upset by LeMars Gehlen in the championship game. Christopher Schmidt, Joe Straub, Anna Kollasch, Rebeccah Erdman, and Michael Fakler ended up finishing third overall among twenty-eight teams. Congratulations, quiz bowl!

The quiz bowl team has technically qualified four different times for the 2009 National Academic Championships, and the Bears are planning to make their tenth trip to nationals. The tentative plan is to go to New Orleans over Memorial Day weekend. The trip will leave Algona on Thursday, May 21. They'll play at least six games at nationals, and they'll return home on Wednesday, May 27. We'll tell you more about the plans as they develop.

Thanksgiving is coming next week, and that marks one of the biggest occasions of the year here at Garrigan. Each November we honor all the alumni who have passed away over the years. This year's memorial mass will be next Wednesday, November 26. The liturgy will be at 9:00 and will include a special PowerPoint presentation featuring all the deceased alumni. You can view that presentation on our website at garrigan - dot -unlimitedweb - dot - net.

After the memorial mass, we'll have another special event on Wednesday. We'll have a special hunger meal organized by the Christian Leadership in Action group. This meal is intended to raise awareness of world hunger. We'll have a light lunch, with the difference between that and the cost of a normal lunch going to help those in need. As we eat we'll also learn about hunger problems around the world.

Winter sports season has started, and the basketball spirit squad is ready. Just like in football season, there will be both competition cheerleaders and girls who cheer at the games. The competition squad includes seniors Meghan Mayer, Maleri Bollig, Kristina Schiltz, Holly Byrkeland, and Amy Rasmussen; as well as juniors Amy Rasmussen and Cassie Reising; sophomores Ryya Kumm and Nora Krahenbuhl; and freshmen Abbey Reding, Carly Loss, and Jessica Springer. Mrs. Erin Miller is in charge of the cheerleaders.

Garrigan's biannual madrigal dinner is just around the corner. This year's madrigal will be Sunday, December 14, and there will be two shows-one at midday and the other at night. Admission to the madrigal is just $20 for adults and $10 for children. You can make reservations by calling the school at 295-3521. Be sure to mark your calendar for December 14 and Madrigal 2008.

The BGHS music department will be hosting a chili supper during the basketball games next Tuesday, when the girls take on St. Ed's. They'll be serving chili, carrots, cinnamon rolls, and a drink. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children, and the profits will be used to help defray the costs of the music trip to New York next March.

For the past two weeks we've been saying a lot of prayers for one of our fellow students, Cedes Forburger. Cedes is at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and she's likely to be there for a long time. On her birthday last Tuesday we had a special day where everyone dressed in her favorite color, lime green. Students gave donations that day, and we raised over $2,000 to help with her expenses. We're continuing to keep Cedes and all the Forburger family in our prayers, and we look forward to seeing her back with us here at Garrigan.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Vince Cruise. Here to tell you about him is Michael Fakler.

Vince Cruise is probably best known for his accomplishments on the football field, where he's helped lead the Bears to playoffs for three straight years. He's also active in quiz bowl, where he's one of the national qualifiers looking to go to New Orleans next summer. With winter approaching, Vince is hoping for snow as he looks forward to one of his favorite activities, snowmobiling. Vince will be going to Northwest Iowa College next year, and he plans a career as an electrical lineman. Good luck, Vince!

Thanks, Michael!  Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, we've got two weeks of events on our Golden Bear calendar. Today there's all-state music in Ames, with Alec Boeckholt, Sam Norland, Rebecca Brosnan, and Sarah Matthews participating.

Monday the girls basketball team will be playing North Sentral Kossuth at Fenton. Then Tuesday the girls will host St. Ed's. The music department will serve a chili supper during the games.

Wednesday morning at 9:00 we'll have our memorial mass honoring the deceased alumni. That noon we'll have the hunger meal. Then we'll dismiss at 2:15 to start the long weekend.

Thursday is Thanksgiving day, and Friday the boys basketball team will play in a jamboree at Graettinger. Friday and Saturday the nurse's aide students will have clinical exams.

Sunday the 30th Advent begins, and we'll have special Advent prayer services each Monday until Christmas. Monday, December 1st, the varsity boys will host NSK and the freshman boys and girls will play at Clear Lake.

Tuesday, December 2nd the basketball teams host Humboldt. The cross-country team will serve a chili supper during the games. Then on Wednesday the quiz bowl team competes in the Knowledge Master.

Thursday, December 4th there's freshman basketball, with the Bears playing at Emmetsburg. The varsity Bears play at Iowa Falls on Friday the 5th, and also that day the danz squad leaves for the state drill team competition in Des Moines.

That's the "Bear Facts" for Thanksgiving week. We'll be off next Saturday because of the holiday, but be sure to join us again in December when we'll return with more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
