The Bear Facts

January 23, 2010

Good morning! I'm Luke McCall!

And I'm Katrina Even! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

It's been another wintry week here at Garrigan-with late starts and no school days pretty much all week long. We did manage to finish up semester tests last Monday, and we got the second semester started on Tuesday-though we only had fourteen minute classes that day. The classes were extra-short because Tuesday afternoon we attended a special play called Vianney that told the story of a French clergyman who became the patron saint of priests. The show combined live performance and film, and it made a break from the routine of classes and tests.

Large group speech is scheduled for today. The weather forecast pretty shaky when we recorded this, and there was a good chance the contest would either be starting late or postponed until Monday. Whenever it happens, though, Garrigan will have a big group of students entered in district speech. Ten entries will be performing, and while practice has been extremely limited with all the cancellations and late starts, we're hoping they do as well as they can.

There are two Musical Theatre selections. Michael Hellman, Becky Jennings, Jake Rosenmeyer, Anna Kollasch, Nora Krahenbuhl, and Alex Hamilton will be performing Anatomy of a Musical, while Cassie Reising and Philip Detrick will present Singin' in the Rain. There are also varsity and JV Readers' Theatre entries. Oh, What a Tangled Web features Lizzy Hohmeister, Amy Rasmussen, Michael Fakler, Stephanie Kajewski, Jenny Broesder, Andrea Altman, and Beth Broesder; and Kiss Me Quick, I'm Double Parked includes Melissa Kellner, Shawn Vaske, Hannah Boisjolie, Sarah McCall, Janet Kenyon, MaKayla Foertsch, Erica Carlson, Melanie Mergen, Amelia Golwitzer, Matthew Fakler, and Erin Reedy.

Becky Jennings, Brie Blocker, and Ryya Kumm will present a group mime about a girls night out-with a little sister tagging along. In Ensemble Acting Taylor Brandenburg, Rebeccah Erdman, Amy Rasmussen, Kelly Klein, and Katrina Even will perform The Committee Meeting, while But Listen stars Cassie Reising, Lizzy Hohmeister, Alex Hamilton, and Michael Fakler. There are also three improvisation groups-with Jake Rosenmeyer, Anna Kollasch, Michael Hellman and Nora Krahenbuhl in one; Philip Detrick, Drew Magill, and Austin Salz in the second; and freshmen Melanie Mergen, Hannah Boisjolie, and Matthew Fakler in the third. Best wishes, speech. ... Break a leg, everyone!

The cast for the 2010 spring play was announced last week. Sabrina Fair will star Nora Krahenbuhl, Rebeccah Erdman, Alex Hamilton, Michael Fakler, Brittany Berte, and Austin Salz; as well as Cassie Reising, Lizzy Hohmeister, Michael Hellman, Becky Jennings, and Jake Rosenmeyer. Rounding out the cast are Anna Kollasch, Matthew Fakler, and Philip Detrick. Showtime will be at 7pm on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27.

Last weekend Garrigan won its division and finished in third place overall at the first ever Twin Lakes Invitational Quiz Bowl, which was held at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids. Congratulations to Captain Jake Rosenmeyer and his teammates Brittany Berte, Rebeccah Erdman, Michael Fakler, and Anna Kollasch!

Also last weekend the Golden Bear math team competed at a Great Lakes Math League tournament in Iowa Falls. It was an especially good day for junior Alex Hamilton, whose overall finish qualified him for state. The Bears had some other high finishes as well. Jeff Broesder took second place in the target round, while Allison Frideres was second in the sprint round and third in target. Congratulations, math team!

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Luke McCall. Here to tell you about him is Kelly Klein.

Luke McCall is an Algona native who is a four-year member of the Golden Bear football team. While sickness kept him out part of this past season, he still finished strong. Luke is in accelerated math classes, and he's been part of the math team. He plans to go to college next year, and we wish him all the best in the future.

Thanks, Kelly! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's district speech contest today in Spencer. Then tomorrow there will be one intramural basketball game that was postponed from last week.

Monday the freshman basketball teams will host Humboldt, with a 6:30 game time. Tuesday Garrigan will play Clear Lake in basketball. The freshman and JV boys will play at Clear Creek school, with the JV girls and the varsity teams at the Clear Lake High School.

Wednesday and Thursday the seniors will be in Cedar Falls for their annual retreat. Thursday night the freshman boys basketball team will host Estherville Lincoln Central. That night is also the Seton Education Fair.

Next Friday night the varsity Bears will host Webster City, with games beginning at 6:15. Then Saturday at 5:00 there's more basketball, with Garrigan taking on Garner Hayfield.

That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.

I'm Luke McCall. You stay classy, Bishop Garrigan!
