Good morning! I'm Rachel Studer!
And I'm Melanie McGuire! Welcome to another edition of the "Bear Facts," the radio show where we let you know everything that's news at Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today three Garrigan students are in Waverly for the annual Meistersingers Music Festival. This year it was three sophomores that were selected for Meistersingers: Kelly Kohlhaas, Janet Kramer, and Heather Stence. They'll be spending the weekend at Wartburg College, where they'll prepare and present a special musical presentation.
Today is also the day for the Iowa High School Speech Association district large-group contest. A bus load of BGHS students is scheduled to head over to Graettinger this morning, where they'll be performing in a wide variety of events. Coaches Mary McCall and Sue Ney have been working with the students since Thanksgiving to prepare for the district contest. The public is always welcome at speech contests, and we encourage everyone to go on over to Graettinger to check out the Golden Bear entries.
This year's speech entries include two one-act plays. The varsity entry is the sad drama "What Are We Going to Do with Mama?" The cast features Julie Henkelvig, Dan Bormann, Rachel Studer, Natalie Salz, and Angie Weber; as well as Tyler Struck, Katie Patterson, and Wade MacDonald. There's also a freshman one-act called "Three on a Bench," which features Mandy Rahm, Adam Rahm, Rebecca McGuire, and Bob Brandenburg.
In Ensemble Acting, students wear street clothes and use classroom chairs and tables as they act out a scene from a play. Garrigan has five ensemble entries this year. "The Three Sillies" actually includes four sillies: Paul Loebach, Dan Bormann, Kelly Wieland, and Sarah Kollasch. You can also see Dennis Gisch, Angie Kohlhaas, Wade MacDonald, and Katie Patterson starring in "Death of the Hired Man". The other varsity ensemble is "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay," featuring Brandon Donahe, Marian Studer, Lynn Kohlhaas, and Brooke Buscherfeld.
Bob Brandenburg and Mandy Rahm are starring in the freshman ensemble piece "Eagles Scream, Too". The other ensemble selection is "If Men Played Cards as Women Do," which includes Adam Rahm, Mark Rasmussen, Michael Loebach, and Chris Kohlhaas. Chris, Michael, and Mark are also entered in Group Improvisation. In that category they'll be given the beginning and ending lines of a story, and they must make up everything in the middle as they go along.
Garrigan's last large group speech entry is in the category of Readers' Theatre, where they use their voices and facial expression instead of costumes or props as they bring out the meaning of a play. Julie Henkelvig, Angie Kohlhaas, Amanda Freking, Maria Loebach, Abby Rahm, Rachel Studer, and Marian Studer are the members of this year's Readers' Theatre cast. They will be performing "The Great Western Melodrama".
Intramural action continued last Sunday, and three teams racked up big victories. Team A crushed Team B, 99 to 17. Meanwhile, Team C came from behind to demolish Team H, 97 to 26. In the final game Team G surged ahead of Team D, 57 to 30. This week's top scorers included Josh Kohlhaas with 52 points, Justin Roethler with 27, Mark Anderson with 23, Adam Sundall with 19, and Eric Becker with 17.
Two of the teams in the middle of this year's intramural competition are Team A and Team D. Team A is captained by Josh Kohlhaas, and his teammates include fellow seniors Adam Sundall, Paul McNertney, Adam Foertsch, Doug Besch, Brent Berte, and Chuck Rahm. They're one of the quickest and most aggressive teams in the field. The captain of Team D is David Monson, who is joined by sophomores John Steier, Matt Elbert, Gavin Illg, Justin Froehlich, Nick Even, Jake Rahm, and Cody Youngwirth.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Alicia Arndorfer and Mark Anderson. Here to fill you in on them is Doug Besch.
Alicia Arndorfer comes to Garrigan from the Corwith area. Among her biggest activities is choir, and this year her schedule is full of health-related classes like Chemistry III, Medical Terminology, and EMT. Alicia will be off to college next year, and we wish her the very best of luck.
Mark Anderson's name is at the top of the list for intramural scoring this season. He's a proud member of the Screaming Stus, or Team C on the intramural roster. Mark also enjoys football, baseball, track, and quiz bowl, and he fills his schedule with tough classes--both from the high school and the college. He'll be joining his classmates at college next year. Good luck, Mark!
Thanks, Doug! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's district large-group speech today at Graettinger. Also this weekend, there's the Meistersingers Festival at Luther College in Waverly.
This afternoon the danz squad will be hosting a clinic for elementary girls. Then tomorrow afternoon, intramurals continue.
Tomorrow morning the Model UN will be sponsoring a waffle breakfast at the Rochleau Center from 8am to 12:30pm. It's all-you-can-eat, and the cost is just $5.
Sunday night the Diocese of Sioux City will host the annual Bishop's Dinner. At that dinner, Seton teacher Sister Annette will be honored with the Diocesan Teacher of the Year Award. Congratulations, Sister!
Monday we'll have auditions for the spring play, "Arsenic and Old Lace". That night the freshman hoopsters play at Algona High.
Tuesday the JV and varsity Bears will host Eagle Grove for a four-game basketball match-up. Then on Wednesday the freshmen travel to West Bend/Mallard.
Thursday we'll dismiss early for a faculty in-service. Also that day, Model UN meets. Then on Friday, the Bears will be travelling to Clarion-Goldfield.
Finally on Saturday, there's a music competition. The jazz band and swing choir will be showing off their stuff against the best other schools have to offer.
That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to catch us next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
