"The Bear Facts"

OCTOBER 23, 1999

Good morning! I'm Nathan Frideres!

And I'm Dennis Gisch! Welcome again to the "Bear Facts," the radio show where we keep you in touch with everything that's happening here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last week's BGHS Quiz Bowl was a very successful event, and the Golden Bears showed that after a re-building year last year, they're back and ready to play. Sixty-eight teams at the tournament represented twenty-eight schools from all over northern Iowa. One of the BGHS teams included captain Louie Bode, Bob Brandenburg, Adam Rahm, and Chris Missal. They were seeded twelfth after the preliminary rounds and then beat LeMars Gehlen to move ahead in the play-offs. They eventually fell to the champions from Forest City, to take a fifth place finish overall.

While only one Garrigan team made the play-offs, it was a good day for other Garrigan students, too. Three other Golden Bear teams ended up in the top half of the competition--with two of them, one consisting mostly of junior girls and the other of senior boys, finishing just out of the play-offs, in 18th and 19th places. The quiz bowl team is busy again today. They're over in West Bend today for their second big tournament of the year. Then next week they'll be back in town for the Algona High Invitational. Good luck throughout the season to the quiz bowl team.

The Golden Bear volleyball team finished up their season last Monday night, when they fell to West Bend Mallard in the district opener. This has been an up and down season for the Golden Bears. They had some good wins over tough teams, as well as some frustrating losses. Seniors Angie Froehlich, Pam Kramer, and Nicole Erpelding have been the core of the Golden Bear team all season long. The volleyball juniors were Kelly Kohlhaas, Andi Kramer, Molly Meyer, Kelly Kunkel, Sara Reding, Mandy Roethler, and Sara Seeley. Backing them up were sophomores Ashley Arndorfer and Jenna Becker, and freshman Janel Richter. We're pleased to salute the volleyball team for their hard work all season long.

It's that time of year again--time for the annual BGHS magazine drive. Next Thursday we'll begin selling subscriptions to TV Guide, People, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Reader's Digest, and all your other favorite periodicals. The prices through the school fundraiser are the same or lower than that through offers you get in the mail. In fact, for most magazines, we'll match the best offer you've gotten. What makes it a really great deal, though, is that 40% of the money stays right here at Garrigan to support every type of school activities.

We urge you to say "yes" when students call you about magazines. And, if you don't get called, you can stop by the school or give us a call to request an ordering catalog. The magazine drive starts next Thursday and continues through Monday, November 8. It is the only way the student council earns money to help out student activities. So throw away those expiration notices, and renew your subscriptions the cheap and easy way--through Garrigan.

There have been a lot of big changes recently on the BGHS website, and one of the biggest will be happening over the next two weeks. The site is moving to its new permanent home, at the much easier to remember address of "garrigan.unlimitedweb.net". You can check either the old or new address to see the revamped homepage, with more and better pictures of the school. There's a new alumni section and an improved school store, as well as a new section celebrating the success of last summers Golden Bear baseball team. And, if you ever miss the "Bear Facts", you can check out all our scripts right on the school homepage. So remember that address--garrigan.unlimitedweb.net--and go there to check out all the changes on the Golden Bears' home page.

It's hard to believe, but the seniors are already making plans for graduation. Last week they voted on their class colors and motto. The Class of 2000 chose sterling silver and eggplant (a dark purple color) for their class colors. At graduation the girls will be carrying ivory and purple roses. And the class motto for 2000 will be "Don't dwell on the past or worry about the future ... just live for today."

On this week's Senior Spotlight we're featuring Abby Gervais and Abby Bartolo. Here to tell you about them is John Mosbach.

Abby Gervais is one of two seniors on this year's Golden Bear cross-country team. She has also lettered in track, and she's active in the Health Occupations Student Assocition. Abby has had a variety of jobs--including working at pools, at the YMCA, and at Algona Manor. She plans to go to college next year, and we wish her all the best.

Abby Bartolo's biggest activity is drill team. She was one of the members of last year's state champion danz squad. She is also active in pep club, and over the years her activities have also included choir and softball. Abby is an honor student, and away from school you might have seen her working as a hostess at Sister Sarah's. She'll also be a college girl next year, and we wish both these Abbys the very best of luck.

Thanks, John. On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's quiz bowl today at West Bend Mallard. Also today Angie Kohlhaas and Autumn Thompson will be auditioning for all-state music. And this afternoon the Garrigan gym will be one of the sites for the Algona craft show.

All next week there's dress rehearsal for "The Music Man," the 1999 BGHS musical. The curtain will go up November 5th and 6th. Monday the freshmen and sophomore football players will host Clarion Goldfield. Tuesday the first quarter ends, and sophomores will be taking the PLAN test.

Thursday the magazine drive begins. Then next Friday we'll have the biggest football game of the season, when the Bears face Southern Cal. The baseball team will be sponsoring a supper before the game Friday night.

That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for setting your dial here, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
