And I'm Molly Black! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts". Thanks for joining us to hear all the latest news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Back before Easter we told you about the big backgammon tournament that was going on at Garrigan. Resource teachers Karen Roman and Colleen Conway-Schiltz organized the event, and sixteen people-including both students and Garrigan staff members-participated. In the end English teacher Sara Kollasch was the overall champion. Among the top students were Alex Bormann, Mat Kirsch, Matt Kollasch, Nick Golwitzer, and Kris Sutter. Others participating were Tim Arndorfer, Peter Bormann, Jude Studer, Ross Froehilch, Jason Lallier, Jace Boekelman, Coach Marty Wadle, and Coach Daryl Kohlhaas. Everyone who played had fun, and they all agreed that they learned a lot, too.
Prom is here. Tonight almost all the juniors and seniors at Garrigan will be dressing up and stepping out for Prom Night, 2004. This year's prom theme is Mardi Gras, and the juniors have been working hard to come up with beautiful decorations on a budget. When the dance ends, the night will just be beginning. The after-prom party is a long-standing tradition at Garrigan, and we'll all be up till dawn playing games and having fun.
Spring sports are well underway, and the seasons are going pretty well. Last Friday the girls track team hosted their first-ever home meet, and they almost won. The team ended up missing the overall championship by just one point. Returning seniors on this year's track team are Lindsay Becker, Jenna Kollasch, Cassie Recker, Lisa Thilges, and Katie Salz. The juniors include Katelyn Besch, Miranda Boekelman, Amanda Thompson, Rose Mayer, Renee Taphorn, Samantha Kirsch, and Kathy Preyloski. There are also twelve juniors and fourteen freshmen who are helping to make the team one of the best-rounded ever. Good luck in the rest of the season to Coach Greg Ahlers and the girls track team!
Last Friday was a big day at Seton Grade
School. KCCI meteorologist John McLaughlin flew into Algona in his helicopter and landed in the parking lot across from St. Cecelia's. He was there to dedicate Seton's new SchoolNet weather
station. Every kid in the grade school was on hand to greet him-and to enjoy some dilly bars. In addition to providing real-time weather data for the forecasters in Des Moines, Seton students use the weather station a lot as part of their science lessons.
David Rasmussen's biggest honor was probably being named to the Academic All-State football team. He also won all-district football honors for his playing ability, and in the winter he was one of the boys who was tough enough to be a cheerleader. David enjoys running track, he's played intramural basketball, and he's even been in group speech. Away from school you might see him working at Hy-Vee. Dave will be off to college next fall, and we wish him all the best.
Monday the advanced biology students will go on a canoeing trip, and that night the danz squad will have their awards banquet. Then on Tuesday the golf teams play Algona High.
Also on Tuesday the boys track team runs in the Emmetsburg E-Hawk Relays, which will be held in Estherville. Also that night the girls run in Forest City.
We'll elect our 2004 - 2005 Student Council President on Wednesday. Thursday we elect class presidents, and Friday we'll choose student council representatives.
Next Wednesday and Thursday afternoons we'll have try-outs for next year's danz squad. Also on Thursday the girls track team runs at Armstrong.
Friday the golf teams play Eagle Grove, with the girls away and the boys at home. Also that night the boys track team runs at Hampton Dumont.
