Facts", KLGA's weekly radio update from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
Over forty Garrigan students are in Spencer today for the Iowa High School Speech Association district large-group contest. Garrigan has twelve different entries at district contest. Two of them have already performed. The choral reading "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" featured John Kohlhaas, Rose Mayer, Renee Taphorn, Brianne Donahe, and Brooke Myers, as well as Jenna Hansen, Melissa Vaske, Katelyn Besch, Nicole Reding, Beth Becker, and Nettie McGuire. The ensemble acting selection "The Committee Meeting" included Keshar Nadkarni, Rosalind Kirsch, Janel Richter, Sarah Erdman, and Andrea
Schiltz.
At 10:15 this morning, Andrea Schiltz, Amber Golwitzer, Scott Stence, and David Rasmussen will present a group improvisation. A 10:30 we'll perform the readers' theatre "Sergeant Peter Best's Lonely Hearts Club" with Sarah Erdman, Janel Richter, Sarah Schmitt, Amanda Wolf, Rachel Foth, Kim Frideres, Josh Broesder, and me-Autumn Thompson. Then at 10:45 Jeff Hellman, John Kohlhaas, Keshar Nadkarni, David Murphy, and Eric Cassmann will star in the one-act play "The Last Touchy-Feely Drama on the American Stage".
Autumn Thompson and I-Steven Kellner-will present the acting selection "Sure Thing" at 1pm. Then at 2:00 you can see "The Cinderella Syndrome" with Rachel Foth, Brooke Myers, Cassie Recker, Rachel McGuire, and Amber Golwitzer. At 2:10 Ashley Waller, Laura Kellner, Nancy Syharath, Brandon Rowley, Seth Rogers, Allison Even, and Amanda Golwitzer will star in the freshman readers' theatre "Barbie, Get Real". Then at 2:45 you can see a group improvisation featuring Jeff Hellman, Eric Cassmann, David Murphy, Rosalind Kirsch, and myself.
The day finishes off with three more group improvisations. At 2:45 Samantha Kirsch, Holly Lancaster, Brianne Donahe, Amanda Thompson, and Theresa Reising will compete. Then at 3:00 there's Laura Kellner, Andrea Arndorfer, Allison Even, and Kayla Reding, followed at 3:05 by Brandon Rowley, Lizzie Mayer, Seth Rogers, and Ashley Waller. We encourage everyone listening to head over to Spencer to watch the talented performers. Break a leg, everyone!
Next week is National Catholic Schools Week. We'll start things off on Monday with a big mass at St. Cecelia's for everyone from kindergarten through high school. Bishop Daniel DiNardo will be in Algona to celebrate the liturgy. Other big events include Student Appreciation Day, and the traditional Black and Gold Day on Friday. On Thursday morning we'll have a staff appreciation breakfast. Three staff members will be honored for twenty years of service to Catholic schools. They include history teacher Ron Patterson, math teacher David Burrow, and Seton cook Phyllis Robinson.
Twenty-two Garrigan students will be participating in a diocesan honor band next Thursday. Making the trip to Storm Lake will be Samantha Arndorfer, Autumn Thompson, Jake Detrick, Amanda Thompson, Adam Elbert, Allison Even, Sam Dittrich, Renee Taphorn, Scott Stence, Gavin Freking, Amanda Golwitzer, Jeff Hellman, Kandice Roethler, Brandon Rowley, Amber Golwitzer, Kelly Schmitt, Samantha Kirsch, Andrew Missal, Brooke Myers, Rosalind Kirsch, Steven Kellner, and Jacob Hellman. Last week the Golden Bear quiz bowl team brought home another trophy. They finished second overall out of more than sixty teams entered at the Eagle Grove Invitational Tournament. The team had a perfect record in the preliminary rounds and won three straight play-off matches before falling to Ankeny in the championship game. Team members included Captian John Kohlhaas, Mike Blocker, David Murphy, Jeff Hellman, Matt Courtney, and Autumn Thompson. Congratulations to all the quiz bowl team!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Adam Gisch and Hillary Frideres. Here to tell you about them is Jenna Hansen.
Adam Gisch is one of the top players in intramural basketball. Last week he scored 32 points in his team's first big game of the season. Adam enjoys singing, and he has been active in choir all through high school. He will be off to college next year, and we wish him all the best.
Hillary Frideres was a four-year member of the cross-country team. She has also been active in track and publications, and in the past you might have heard her here on the "Bear Facts". Hillary will also plans to go to college next fall. Good luck to both Hillary and Adam!
On our Senior Spotlight today there's the district large-group speech contest at Spencer. There's also a math competition at Iowa Falls. Then tomorrow intramural basketball continues.
Monday we'll have out Catholic Schools Week mass with Bishop DiNardo at St. Cecelia's. That night the freshman basketball teams play at Algona High, while the JV and varsity boys take on Sentral here at Garrigan. The basketball team will be serving a hamburger supper during the games.
Tuesday we'll have a jeans day as we celebrate Student Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools Week. That night the basketball teams play at Clear Lake. Wednesday the freshman and JV boys host North Kossuth, and that night the junior parents will plan after-prom events.
Thursday is the diocesan honor band and the staff appreciation breakfast. Then next Friday the basketball Bears will host Clarion/Goldfield. The danz squad will have a clinic before the game, and the math team will be serving a spaghetti supper that night.
