Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High
School.
Last Saturday the Garrigan speech team had one of its best days ever. They competed at the district large-group contest in Fort Dodge, and nine of the Bears' eleven entries earned Division One ratings-the best percentage showing they have ever had at large-group contest. The events that were judged "excellent" include the one-act play "The Wildflowering of Chastity"; the readers' theatre "A Mad Breakfast"; the choral reading "Rinse the Blood off My Toga"; three acting ensembles called "Deliver Us Not", "My Gypsy Robe", and "Bubbles Goes to School"; and three group improvisations. All these events will now advance to the state contest next weekend in Spencer.
Today the BGHS danz squad is in Iowa City for the regional drill team competition. They will be performing their state routine, which earned outstanding reviews in Des Moines last month. State routine. Dance squad is coached by Colleen Conway-Schiltz and Carey Harris. The senior dancers are Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Roethler, Laura Seeley, and Monica Studer. Juniors include Lindsey Eischen, Rachel, Kim Frideres, Nikki Loebig, Sarah Schmitt, and Amanda Wolf. Other danz squad members include sophomores Maria Erpelding and Nicole Krieps and freshman Ashley Shaw. Becca Studer and Melissa Vaske are the alternates. Good luck to all these dancers as they perform today!
We'd also like to congratulate Stephanie Hilbert on another accomplishment. Stephanie was a local winner in the Voice of Democracy competition. In Voice of Democracy, students write an original speech on a patriotic topic and then tape record their address. Stephanie won the local contest and then advanced to districts, where she finished in fourth place overall. Congratulations!
There's another group competing today. That's the Golden Bear math
team. BGHS is part of the Great Plains Math League, which sponsors mathematics competitions throughout the Midwest. Today twelve Garrigan students are in Iowa Falls for one of the larger contests in the area. Seniors Chris Kohlhaas, Rebecca McGuire, and Cathy Hellman will be at the core of today's team. Also competing are juniors Jeff Hellman, Christoph Gebele, Steven Kellner, Rosalind Kirsch, and David Murphy; sophomores John Kohlhaas and Eric Cassman; and freshmen Samantha Kirsch and Matt Courtney. Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Mindy Buscher and Ben Meyer.
Mindy Buscher is probably best known as an athlete. She is a four-year member of both the volleyball and girls' basketball teams. Mindy is also co-president of the BGHS Class of 2002, and she's editor of this year's Garrigold yearbook. Mindy is a two-year National Honor Society member who has won a number of other awards over her time at Garrigan. She'll be off to college next fall, and we wish her all the best.
There's no question that Ben Meyer's favorite sport is golf. He has been part of the Golden Bear golf team ever since he was a freshman. Ben is an honor student who is currently the top scorer in intramural basketball. Ben would like to go to Iowa State University next fall, and we wish him good luck!
On the Golden Bear calendar this week, there's the regional dance competition today at Iowa City. Also this morning the math team is competing in Iowa Falls.
Tomorrow intramural basketball continues. All next week is also Catholic Schools Week, when we celebrate the value of Catholic education in America.
Monday afternoon we'll have our all-school liturgy for Catholic Schools Week, with everyone from both Seton and Garrigan gathering together at St. Cecelia's. The public is invited to come to mass at 1:30pm.
Monday night is the annual Evening of Theatre, where you can see all the award-winning large-group speech performances. Admission is free, and popcorn will be provided. The performance is at 6pm Monday in the Garrigan gym.
Tuesday will be a Black and Gold Day. That night we'll have "Pack the Gym Night" as the Bears host Clear Lake. The Publications staff will hold a fundraiser dinner at the game.
Also on Tuesday the Golden Bear danz squad will host a clinic for girls in grades kindergarten through eight. The little girls will be performing their routines at halftime of the Clear Lake game.
Wednesday will be a jeans day at Garrigan. That night the C-team boys will host Mason City Newman. Then Thursday there will be no school at Garrigan, as the staff, board, students, and parents prepare for our state and diocesan evaluation.
Next Friday we'll begin the month of February with First Friday adoration in the Garrigan chapel. That night the basketball Bears will travel to Iowa Falls. Then next Saturday there's the state large-group speech contest at Spencer.
