Golf season is well underway. The boys have had an up and down spring, with some outstanding meets and some where they didn't do as well. This year's boys golf team features six returning seniors: Tyler Erpelding, Adam Cink, Andy Meyer, Steve Goede, Ben Meyer, and Nick Lane. Junior Alex Vaske is also out for golf-as are sophomores Ben Geelen, Grant Vaske, and Jason Lallier. Rounding out the squad are freshmen Jordan Kajweski, Billy Vaske, and Tim Richter. Good luck to Coach Roger Froehlich and the boys golf team!
The girls golf team has been having an excellent season. As of late this week the varsity squad had a perfect 5 - 0 record, while the JV was 4 - 1. The varsity golf team includes Andrea Schiltz, Amanda Wolf, Ashley Thompson, Katie Von Ruden, Ashley Berte, and Lindsey Schiltz. Golfing JV you'll see Lizzie Bormann, Michaela Mescher, Brooke Myers, Jenna Hansen, and Amanda Elbert. Rounding out the squad for the girls are Jill Patterson, Renee Taphorn, and Debbie Kohlhaas. We hope the season continues to go well for Coach Dean Capesius and all the girls golf team!
This is a busy time of year for the BGHS publications staff. With all the events coming to an end, there is a series of deadlines as the staff rushes to get the yearbook done. The editors of this year's Garrigold yearbook are Heather Fickbohm and Mindy Buscher. Other seniors working on the publications staff are Ashley Arndorfer, Kristy Boever, Jamie Roethler, Jenna Becker, Bob Brandenburg, and Adam Randy; as well as Bridget Buscherfeld, Jill Goodman, Stephanie Hilbert, Emily O'Kane, Mandy Rahm, Teresa McGuire, Cathy Hellman, Rebecca McGuire, and Brianna Miller.
Justin Fickbohm and Steven Kellner are the only juniors in publications; while Jordan Kajewski, Holly Lancaster, and Nicole Reding represent the freshman class. There is a big group of sophomores working on the yearbook and newspaper-including Ashley Berte, Maria Erpelding, Molly Black, Amber Golwitzer, and Amanda Elbert. The rest of the publications staff is made up of John Kohlhaas, Jenna Kollasch, Nicole Krieps, Jason Lallier, Lisa Thilges, and Melissa Vaske. We know they'll be putting together another great yearbook this year!
Last Tuesday eight Garrigan art students competed at the North Central Conference art show in Clear Lake. Ashley Schiltz received one of just ten blue ribbons that were presented conference-wide for her collage remembering grades 9 through 11. Monica Studer received a first place plaque for her two-dimensional work, which was a mixed media painting of a girl's face. This was one of the top three awards out of 130 students in the conference. Other art students chosen to compete were Adam Cink, Adam Raney, Jamie Loebig, Mike Loebach, Rosalind Kirsch, and Andrew Kollasch. Congratulations to these artists and to art teacher Steve Brosnan.
Next week we'll be holding elections for the 2002 - 2003 BGHS Student Council. This year five pairs of candidates are running to be student body co-presidents. There are two pairs of boys: Zac Lickteig and Alex Vaske, and Mark McGregor and Lee Elbert. Two pairs of girls are also running: Rachel Foth and Kim Frideres, and Andrea Schiltz and Nicole Elbert. Finally there's one mixed couple: David Murphy and Sarah Schmitt. Good luck to all the candidates!
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Ashley Thompson and Jamie Roethler. Here to tell you about them is Rachel Foth.
Ashley Thompson is an Algona native who is active in lots of activities. She is a four-year golfer who is proud of having made it to state. She went to the national HOSA competition last summer, and over the years she's also been active in cheerleading and pep club. Ashley will be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Jamie Roethler has one of the top grade points in the senior class. Over the years her biggest activities have been danz squad and track, and this year she was also active in pep club, intramurals, and Christian Leadership in Action. Jamie plans to be off to UNI in the fall. Good luck to both Jamie and Ashley!
On out Golden Bear calendar, this weekend's biggest event is Confirmation. Sophomores and juniors from Wesley and St. Benedict will be confirmed at Wesley this afternoon at 4pm. Tonight at 7:30 there will be confirmation at St. Cecelia's for sophomores from Algona, Whittemore, and St Joe.
Tomorrow morning will be confirmation at St. John's for Bancroft and Ledyard students, and then in the afternoon juniors will have confirmation at St. Cecelia's.
Monday baseball practice starts. That night the golf teams play Webster City. Then Tuesday we'll have the student council presidential election, and that night the boys track team runs at Algona High.
Wednesday we'll have class president elections. That night there's girls track at Eagle Grove, while the golf teams take on Iowa Falls. Then Thursday we'll have the annual Grandparents Day.
Thursday is also the CYO boys golf tournament at Alton. That night we'll have the spring concert and art show in the gym. There's First Friday adoration on Friday, followed by girls track at Lake Mills and the boys running in the BGHS Relays at Algona High.
