And I'm Sarah Mayer! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio update from Bishop Garrigan High School.
The Golden Bear speech team had an awesome day at the state individual speech contest last weekend in LeMars. Garrigan has eighteen entries at state, and eleven of those ended up bringing home Division One or "excellent" ratings. The good news didn't stop with division ones, though. Monday afternoon this year's all-state speech nominations were announced, and we're proud to say that the Bears had three names on that list. Eric Cassmann will be telling the politically-correct story of "Chicken Little" at all-state, Amber Golwitzer will be performing a literary program on teenagers, while her sister Amanda Golwitzer made all-state with the prose piece "The Pet Shop Sketch". Congratulations to all these students, and to coaches Mary McCall and Sarah Freking.
Garrigan's health occupations students also did well last weekend, when they competed in the state HOSA conference in Des Moines. Garrigan students brought home nine medals from state. Katelyn Besch took first place in both health care issues and veterinary assisting, as well as third in health care concepts. Lisa Thilges was third in health issues and sixth in health care concepts; and Ashley Berte was fifth in health care concepts. Ashley, Lisa, and Katelyn also competed as a team in biomedical debate, where they finished in second place statewide. Congratulations to these girls, as well as to HOSA coach Jeanne Wunder.
Tonight is your last chance to see State Fair, Garrigan's spring musical. More than eighty students have been working hard preparing the music, as well as the set and costumes, and it's turned out to be a great show. Students with speaking roles include seniors Jesse Bode, Scott Stence, Liz Bormann, Brooke Myers, Jenna Kollasch, John Kohlhaas, Josh Broesder, Eric Cassmann, and Amber Golwitzer; as well as juniors Matt Courtney, Sam Dittrich, Samantha Kirsch, Rose Mayer, Jacob Richter, and Amanda Thompson.
There's a large group of sophomores with speaking parts in State Fair: Andrea Arndorfer, Ashley Waller, Jennifer Vaske, Jake Detrick, Bridget Doughan, and Gavin Freking; plus Jacob Hellman, Brad Thompson, Nancy Syharath, Brandon Rowley, Amanda Golwitzer, Andrew Missal, and Chris Kirsch. Finally, three freshman will be speaking in the play. They are Garrison Brosnan, Chris Loebach, and Joey Dailey. Pretty much the whole choir is involved in the show, too, and the art students have been working hard getting a very complicated set to look perfect. Showtime is 7:30pm tonight, and tickets are just $5 each. So be sure to see our spring musical, State Fair.
Spring sports have started. The golf teams began practice last week, and the girls golf team is returning quite a few veterans. Seniors out for golf this year are Michaela Mescher, Ashley Berte, and Amanda Elbert. Joining them are juniors Debbie Kohlhaas and Lindsay Schiltz; sophomores Sarah Kunkel, Amanda Shaw, and April Wolf; and freshmen Caryn Taphorn, Laura O'Kane, Alissa McGuire, Alyssa Gisch, Amanda Cruise, and Anna Bormann. Good luck to Coach Dean Capesius and the girls golf team!
Coach Roger Froehlich has two seniors on the 2004 boys golf team: Jason Lallier and Kris Sutter. There are also two juniors in golf: Tim Richter and Matt Vitzthum. The core of the team is sophomores, including Jace Boekelman, Noah Devine, Brad Thompson, Derek Lanus, Matt Kollasch, Eric Goodman, Ross Froehlich, Dan Garman, and Bobby Geelan. Rounding out the team are two freshmen: Alex Elbert and Logan Wood. Good luck, golfers!
Some of the most cut-throat competition at Garrigan the past couple of weeks has been happening in the resource room. Resource teachers Karen Roman and Colleen Schiltz have organized a backgammon tournament that includes all the students they teach in the learning disabilities program, as well as pretty much anyone else who wants to play. Lots of teachers and students have joined in the double-elimination tournament in a game that combines skill and luck. We'll keep you updated on who the winners are on a future show.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Tony Becker and Miles Berte. Here to tell you about them is Josh Broesder.
Tony has been a basketball manager and statistician. He has also been involved in intramural basketball. When he's not hanging around Garrigan, you might see him working at the Pizza Ranch in Algona. We wish Tony all the best in the future.
Miles Berte was one of the first-team all-intramural players for 2004. His primary activity is football, and in the past he's also been active in track. He does farm work with pigs, and you might also see him stocking the shelves at the Algona K-Mart store. Miles will be off to college next year, and we wish him good luck.
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, the quiz bowl team is competing today at Boone. Then tonight is your last chance to see State Fair. Showtime is 7:30pm.
Tomorrow football cheerleading try-outs begin at the Rochleau Center. Monday and Tuesday after school we'll have registration for next year's classes.
Next Thursday is the Iowa Lakes business competition in Emmetsburg. Also that day nineteen seniors will go to the Mary's Place mission in Minneapolis. Friday night there's CYO track in Sioux City and the preview party for Gala, 2004.
Finally today, we'd like to congratulate Coach Daryl Kohlhaas, who was named CYO Coach of the Year in cross-country for 2003 - 2004. Congratulations, Mr. Kohlhaas!
