Facts", where we're wrapping up Homecoming week here at Bishop Garrigan High
School.
All week long we've been celebrating Homecoming here at Garrigan. Every year part of that tradition is the big class competition. That began last Sunday when we put up decoration in the hallways. The sophomore hallway was rated best by the judges, even though it quickly fell down under its own weight. The juniors finished second in hallway, followed by the freshmen and the seniors.
Floats are another part of the class competition. In honor of the Old West theme, the sophomores built a teepee for their winning float. The juniors and seniors built covered wagons, while the freshman float re-enacted the great train robbery. Thursday we had a special assembly with Homecoming skits, and the senior skit took top honors overall. Each class also built hoops for the athletes to run through at the pep rally. The judges thought all four hoops were sensational this year, but they narrowly gave the sophomore hoop top honors overall.
All week long we had special dress days for Homecoming. On Monday it was Pajama Day, and the junior class had top participation. Tuesday was Western Day, with the senior class dressed up the most. Wednesday was Jersey Day, and the seniors won top honors. On Thursday we had the traditional Black and Gold Day, and only one student in the whole school didn't dress up in school colors. Then on Friday we closed out the week with Dress-Up Day.
A highlight of Homecoming every year is the big coronation ceremony on Thursday night. When all the votes were counted this year, Andrea Schiltz was named Homecoming Queen for 2002. This year's Homecoming king had the honor of starting a new tradition by wearing an actual crown on his head. For 2002, our Homecoming king is Zac Lickteig. Congratulations to Zac and Andrea!
The Golden Bear cross-country team had their best meet of the season last Tuesday at Humboldt. The boys team finished fourth in a field of twenty-four teams. Jeff Hellman had his best time of the year, finishing the five kilometer course in 17 minutes 14 seconds, which was good for fourth place among more than 150 runners. Three other Garrigan boys also medalled-John Kohlhaas in 14th place, Matt Courtney in 29th place, and Brandon Rowley in 30th. On the girls side Rose Mayer earned her first career medal, finishing in 35th place overall.
One of the most successful activities at Garrigan in recent years has been the math team. Garrigan is part of the Great Plains Math League, where students compete at creative problem solving. This year's first math league competition will be today at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Seniors competing today include Steven Kellner, Jeff Hellman, Rosalind Kirsch, and David Murphy. Other math team players are junior John Kohlhaas; sophomores Matt Courtney and Samantha Kirsch; and freshmen Noah Devine, Jeff Lappe, and Ana Maria Pals. Good luck to them!
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on our Homecoming King, Zac Lickteig. Here with the details is
Molly.
Zac Lickteig is a football captain who won all-district and Scout Team honors. He qualified for the state track meet, he lettered in baseball, and he has also performed co-ed routines for the danz squad. Zac is an honor student who is co-president of the Bishop Garrigan Class of 2003. He is a four-year member of the quiz bowl team, and away from Garrigan you might see him working at the Y. Zac plans to Buena Vista University, and we wish him the very best of luck.
Thanks, Molly! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's the first Math League competition of the year today in Cedar Rapids. Also this morning the volleyball team is playing in the Clarion tournament.
Monday we begin the Iowa Tests of Educational Development, which will continue over the next two weeks. Monday night the JV football team hosts Mason City Newman.
Also on Monday the cross-country team has the next best thing to a home meet, as they run at the Whittemore Golf Course in the Algona Invitational Tournament. And Monday is also when the volleyball team hosts Algona High.
Next Tuesday is Picture Day at Garrigan. Then Wednesday about half the students will be gone for to Sioux City for the annual Catholic Choral Festival. Wednesday morning the student council will do their Adopt-a-Highway project in Sexton.
Thursday there's ninth grade football in Belmond. Next Friday the varsity Bears play North Iowa at Buffalo Center, and then on Saturday it's time for Algona Band Day.
