And I’m Erin Quinlin! Welcome to the 875th weekly episode of the “Bear Facts”, where ever since 1992 we’ve been bringing you all the latest news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Last weekend the Golden Bear quiz bowl team competed at an event sponsored by National Academic Quiz Tournaments that was held at Alta—Aurelia High School. The Bears were the defending champions at this tournament, and they more than held their own this year. Garrigan dominated their competition, winning by an average of 214 points per game. They racked up a perfect 10 – 0 record, including victories over teams like Sioux City East and Algona High.
Junior Hannah Bernhard was captain of the championship team. Her teammates included senior Levi Bernhard, junior Zach Kollasch, and sophomore Devin Degen. A second group from Garrigan finished seventh overall out of 21 teams in the tournament. That team included Tony Kollasch, Logan Capesius, and Joseph Espinosa. The win qualifies Garrigan for the NAQT national tournament. They will not be going to that event, because they already committed to make their fifteenth trip to the National Academic Championships, which will be Memorial Day weekend in New Orleans.
Tonight is your last chance to catch Murder with Tomato Sauce, the 2014 BGHS spring play. It’s a comedy murder mystery that will be fun for the whole family. Showtime is 7:00 tonight in Friedmann Auditorium, so be sure to catch Murder with Tomato Sauce.
Last Tuesday ten Garrigan seniors went down to Seton to serve as DARE role models. DARE, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, works with law enforcement to help young people to lead healthy lifestyles. This year’s DARE role models are Chris Loss, Sabrina Book, Erin Quinlin, Neal Koob, Alexa Capesius, Kara Eischen, Nathan Krieps, Taylor Hovey, and Brayton Loss. Congratulations to them.
We recently told you about Garrigan’s entry in the Envirothon, a competition that tests students’ knowledge and practical skills in environmental science. This past week biology teacher Beany Bode learned that Garrigan’s top regional entry—Emily Riesenberg, Taylor Frideres, Kylie Fox, Morgan Frideres, and Kristian Matthews—had done well enough to qualify for the state Envirothon. State will be held in southwest Iowa in April. Congratulations,

Spring sports season is here! In addition to the traditional track and golf, for the past few years several Garrigan students have participated in the Izaak Walton League’s target shooting program. Morgan Muller heads up the shooting team at BGHS. Her teammates this year include Jacob Berte, Mariah Bronk, LeeAnn Eischen, Logan Rosenmeyer, Nicole Walker, Grant Arndorfer, Taylor Becker, Sam Harriganton, Matt Thul, Jacob Thul, Charles Berte, and Matt Lappe. The track teams will begin their season with the CYO meet next Wednesday. The Golden Bear girls return five seniors this year: Nicole Behr, Aisha Miller, Vanessa Dodds, Brittany Kirsch, and Sabrina Book. On the boys side there are four seniors in track this year: Nick Bronk, Brayton Loss, Chris Loss, and Corey Weydert. Good luck all season long to the track teams!
Next week will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary for Garrigan’s Gala fundraiser. The theme for Gala 2014 is “Silver Celebration”, and both students and adults are already busy transforming the gym into a sparkling ballroom. Again this year there will be a preview party Friday night, and the big event will be Saturday, when guests will enjoy an elegant meal and bid on all the auction items. We’ll fill you in on all the details of Gala on next week’s show.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Chris Loss. Chris is a three sport athlete. He was a football captain and MVP who won academic all-state awards. He was all-conference in basketball and a district champion is track. Chris is also a DARE role model. He’s active in Christian Leadership, and he serves on the school wellness committee. Chris plans to be a pre-med major at college, and we wish him all the best in the future.
On our Golden Bear calendar, tonight is the final performance of the spring play Murder with Tomato Sauce. Then tomorrow we’ll be installing carpet in the gym for Gala.
Monday junior Mark Fakler will perform at the All-State Speech Festival in Cedar Falls. Wednesday we’ll have a Lenten reconciliation service at St. Cecelia’s, and that afternoon the track teams will be at Buena Vista University for the CYO track meet.
Thursday a group of Christian Leadership students will be at the Mary’s Place mission in Minneapolis. After school that day the quiz bowl team will compete in the online 3—2—1 competition.
Next Friday there’s boys track at Forest City. Finally that night there’s the preview party for Gala 2014.
