Today is Algona Band Day, and the Bishop Garrigan
Solid Gold Marching Band is ready for competition. This years field commanders are Rebecca McGuire and Autumn Thompson; and directors Dennis Freking, John Mallett, and Greg Ahlers have been busy getting the band ready for the big day. The first part of the competition is the Band Day parade, which will begin at 1:00 this afternoon. We invite everyone to watch the Garrigan band as they march down State Street for Band Day.
The biggest part of band day is the field competition, which starts at 6:30pm at the Algona High football field. The performance time for the Solid Gold Marching Band is 7:15pm, and this year the band will be performing their "Piano Man Tour". The show opens with "Crocodile Rock", followed by Billy Joel's "My Life". The percussion ensemble performs "Spinning Song", and finally the whole band closes things up with "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me". Good luck to the band today and then again next week, when they'll compete in the state marching band competition.
Once Band Day is over, it's the choir's turn to take the spotlight. Next Wednesday they'll travel to Ft. Dodge St. Edmond for the annual Sioux City Diocese Catholic Choral Festival. During the day all the Catholic choirs from all over northwest Iowa will practice together, under the direction of a famous musician. Then at night, everyone is invited to come down to Ft. Dodge for the Choral Festival Concert.
While the choir is in Ft. Dodge for the Catholic Choral Festival, another group of students will be in Sexton. They're members of the
student council, who will be doing their semiannual Adopt-a-Highway project. Every October and April student council members walk through the ditches along Highway 18 picking up the litter that has accumulated. They chip in to do their part to keep Sexton beautiful.
Student Council is also responsible for all the Homecoming activities that took place last week. Because of a short week we had to tape last week's "Bear Facts" before all the Homecoming winners were known, so we want to update you on all the results now. When the votes were all counted, Luke DeWaard and Stephanie Hilbert were named the 2001 Homecoming King and Queen. In the class competition, the sophomores won most of the individual events, but in the end things came down to the Spirit Stick. The seniors won that, and that helped them take the overall class competition.
Next week the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will all be taking out their #2 pencils for the annual Iowa Tests of Educational Development. The ITEDs are especially important for the juniors, because the state of Iowa evaluates high schools based on the progress of each year's junior class. In the past we've often had a special schedule for ITEDs, but now for the second straight year we'll be taking the English tests in our English classes, the math tests during math, and so forth. This week's Senior Spotlight shines on our Homecoming royalty -- Stephanie Hilbert and Luke DeWaard. Here to tell you everything about them is Mike McAlpine.
Stephanie Hilbert is a St. Joe native who has been active in lots of activities. She's won letters in golf, softball, choir, and drama. In danz squad, she not only lettered, but also was named to the All-Iowa Honor drill team. Steph is a cheerleader, and she's also active in publications and student council. She organized the first powder puff football game at Garrigan in twenty years. Stephanie plans to attend Iowa State next year, and we wish her all the best.
Luke DeWaard is a football captain who has won all-district honors at linebacker. He's a Wesley native who also lettered in track, and his intramural team won the championship last year. Luke is a National Honor Society member who worked for the Algona Cemetery Department. Next year Luke plans to attend a junior college. Good luck to both Luke and Stephanie, our 2001 Homecoming King and Queen.
Thanks, Mike! On this week's Golden Bear calendar, today is Algona Band Day. The parade is at 1pm, and Garrigan performs in the field competition at 7:15 tonight.
Monday ITEDs begin in English classes. There's freshman football that night, with the Bears hosting Humboldt. Also that night the volleyball Bears play at Clear Lake.
Tuesday there's cross-country at Eagle Grove. Then on Wednesday it's Catholic Choral Day. That afternoon the student council will do their Adopt-a-Highway project in Sexton. Then Thursday there's freshman speech try-outs.
Next Friday we'll have First Friday adoration during religion classes. Then next Friday night the football Bears have their toughest game of the season when they travel to Lake City to face top-ranked Southern Cal.
