Good morning! I'm Chris Scobba!
And I'm Laura Kellner! Welcome to a spooky edition of the "Bear Facts". Happy Halloween from all the ghosts here at Bishop Garrigan High School.
The regional champion Golden Bear cross-country team is hoping to spook the competition today at state. About fifteen minutes from now they'll be leaving for Fort Dodge, where they hope to make a big showing at the state cross-country meet. Maria Kohlhaas has led the Golden Bear girls throughout the season. Also running in the "Black Pack" are Kelli Black, Tami Lallier, Carrie Courtney, Alison Brandenburg, Marisa Spain, and Kelly Schmidt. Alison Even, Samantha Kirsch, Bridget Doughan, and Krissy Kohlhaas will be alternates at state.
The girls are going to state as the first-ever regional champions from Garrigan, and they also hold the record for best team score. No one knows exactly how things will go at state, but we're all hoping for an excellent showing. The bus for state will be leaving at 9:00 this morning, so if you leave now you'll just make it in time for the send-off. The girls will be running at 2:00 this afternoon at Kennedy Park just north of Fort Dodge. We encourage everyone to come down to cheer the girls on to victory!
The Golden Bear football team has also had a great season they finished their regular season and play-off seedings were announced last night. The Bears ended up 6 - 1, with their only loss to powerhouse St. Ansgar. The 1-A Bears also scored big wins over class 3-A Algona High and class 2-A St. Edmond, both of whom ended up doing well in their own classes.. Congratulations to the football team on a great regular season!
One week from today the BGHS fine arts department will present the second Garrigan extravaganza, where students, alumni, and teachers will all join together in a special variety show called "Who's Acting Up at Garrigan". The evening includes drama selections called "Deliver Us Not", "The Seven Ages of Man", "Remember When", and "Men Are from Milwaukee, Women are from Phoenix". There is also interpretive dance by April Wolf and Brianne Donahe, singing, and a brass ensemble.
Drama students involved in the extravaganza include Laura Kellner, Amanda Golwitzer, Ashley Waller, Andrew Missal, Brandon Rowley, and Garrison Brosnan. Other students helping out are Rose Mayer, Chris Leobach, Seth Rogers, Gavin Greking, Jesse Studer, Jude Studer, Alison Even, and Dustin Rowley. Faculty members Mary McCall, Sarah Freking, Denis Greenfield, David Burrow, and Dennis Freking will be lending their talents, as will alumni Mark DeLange, Tyler Struck, and Eric Cassmann. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, with proceeds going to support the arts at Garrigan. Curtain time is 6:30 one week from today, Saturday, November 6.
Garrigan's annual magazine drive is off to a good start. After just three days we had already met over one-third of our overall goal. One of the more interesting gimmicks the student council uses to get people to sell is a promotion that offers the top seller in each class their height in $2 bills. Last Thursday Bill Vaske, Ross Froehlich, Tony Rouse, and Bridget Murphy each received twelve of the special bills from that promotion. The magazine drive continues for another week. Prices through Garrigan are the same or less than through other offers, and when you buy from us 40% of the money stays right here to help out the school. So find your favorite Golden Bear and renew your subscriptions today.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Sam Dittrich. Here to tell you about him is Tami Lallier.
One of the highlights of Sam Dittrich's career as a Golden Bear came last Friday when he scored his first varsity touchdown. Sam has the distinction of being one of the few Garrigan students who isn't Catholic. He fits in well with everyone at school, though, and there's no question that he's a Golden Bear. In addition to football, Sam is runs track, he plays the drums and guitar, and he's active in the youth group at his church. Away from school, you're most likely to see him running one of the check-outs at K-Mart. Sam plans to go to college next year, and we wish him all the best.
Thanks, Tami. On our Golden Bear calendar today there's the state cross-country meet in Ft. Dodge. The regional champion Bishop Garrigan girls will be leaving from the gym just a few minutes from now.
Tomorrow is Halloween, and daylight savings time ends. Then on Monday we'll have a K-12 mass at St. Cecelia's for All Saints Day.
Tuesday is Election Day. We'll have a mock campaign and election here at Garrigan that day. Tuesday night at 5:30 the state-bound BGHS football cheerleaders will be presenting their state routine in the Garrigan gym. Danz squad members will also present their solo performances at that time.
Wednesday football play-offs begin, and on Thursday we'll have the fall vocal concert. Finally next Friday the football cheerleaders leave for the state cheer contest in Cedar Rapids.
That's the "Bear Facts" for October. Happy Halloween, and be sure to catch our show again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
