THE BEAR FACTS
October 30, 2021
Good morning! I’m Emma Grandgenett!
I’m Katelyn Cink!
And I’m Eva Snyder! Happy Halloween from all of us spooks here at Bishop Garrigan High School!
The state cross-country meet is happening this weekend down in Ft. Dodge.
Garrigan Senior Quinn Swift will be running at state for the second straight
year. Quinn qualified for state by finishing in third place out of 98 runners in
the district meet last week in Mason City. He finished the 5-kilometer course in
a time of 17 minutes, 20.9 seconds. We know Quinn will give it all he’s got when
he runs at state this afternoon.
The 1-A boys race will be this 3:15pm. State cross-country is held at the Lakeside Golf Course at Kennedy Park, just north of the Ft. Dodge Airport. This year you have to buy tickets in advance. Tickets cost $10, plus handling fees, and you can get them through the Varsity Bound website. The good news is that parking at state cross-country is free this year.
Also today the Golden Bear quiz bowl team is in action again. The Bears will be down in Ankeny, participating in the Iowa Quiz Bowl League fall kick-off tournament. Bishop Garrigan is likely to be the smallest school in the tournament, which mostly features large schools from the Des Moines metro area. Sam Plathe, Benjy Trainer, and Brendan Plathe will be competing for the Bears today. Good luck, quiz bowl!
With Halloween here, Garrigan is sponsoring a pumpkin decorating contest for high school students. The pumpkins are provided by biology teacher Beany Bode, who also operates the pumpkin patch at Bode’s Moonlight Gardens. Students can carve, paint, or etch their pumpkins. They will be judged on Monday, and $200 in prizes will be given out.
This coming Tuesday and Wednesday we’ll be having parent—teacher conferences at Garrigan and Seton. Last year conferences were held over Zoom because of the pandemic. While an online option is available this year, we’re encouraging parents to come and visit with teachers in person. Conferences will be after school Tuesday and Wednesday, from 3:45 to 7pm.
Next weekend the Bishop Garrigan music and drama departments will be presenting the annual fall musical. This year’s show is The Pirates of Penzance, a classic by the famous composers Gilbert and Sullivan. It includes famous songs like “Poor Wandering Ones” and “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major—General”.
Garrigan’s production of The Pirates of Penzance features Nate Bronk, Meredith Tigges, Drew Casey, Benjy Trainer, Marguerite Fakler, and Xander Darling. Also in the cast are Isabel Casey, Meredith Illg, Savannah Waechter, Eva Snyder, Hollis Bode, Sam Plathe, Nathaniel Darling, and Griffin Geving.
The show also includes Daniel Meis, Brendan Plathe, Violet Bode, and Avery Lichter; as well as Ava Hough, Isabella Waechter, Madelyn Bronk, Alaina Bormann, Brooke Ludwig, Alaina Casey, Elena Salinas, Lauren Swift, Maggie Vaske, and Joey Doerning. Showtime is next Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm.
In addition to being used for religious events at school, the new Bishop Garrigan chapel is periodically open for public worship too. The first Saturday of every month confessions will be heard in the chapel at 8am, followed by a parish mass at 8:30. There’s also a parish mass every Monday at 7:30 at Garrigan. The chapel preserves the historic altar and windows from St. Benedict Church, combining them with beautiful modern architecture. We encourage you to come for mass in this beautiful holy space.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Ella Muller. Here to tell you about
her is Garrett Heying.
Ella Muller is one of the top athletes in the Class of 2022. She’s probably most proud of being part of the state runner-up basketball team, and she hopes to be back at state this year. Ella also plays volleyball, and she’s been in both track and golf. She’s an honor society member and a senior class co-president who’s active in choir, and she also works on the tech crew for plays. Ella wants to study psychology or medicine in college, and we wish her good luck in the future.
Thanks, Garrett. On this week’s Golden Bear calendar, the quiz bowl team is on the road this morning, with a big tournament at Ankeny. Then this afternoon Quinn Swift will run in the state cross-country meet.
Tomorrow is Halloween, and then Monday is All-Saints Day. Because of the holy day, we’ll have our weekly school mass on Monday next week instead of Tuesday.
Parent—teacher conferences are next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Parents can either come in person, or they can schedule a virtual conference over Zoom.
Next Thursday we’ll have parish busing at Garrigan. That’s because we have a full day of school, with the Algona Community Schools getting out early. That extra time adds up, and it’s why Garrigan always gets out earlier in the spring.
There’s no school next Friday. This is a comp day for the teachers who were working at night with conferences during the week. Finally next Saturday the curtain opens on The Pirates of Penzance.
That’s the “Bear Facts” for October. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
