And I’m Danielle Plathe! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio update from Bishop Garrigan High School.
It’s quiz bowl time again at Garrigan. For the past quarter century Garrigan has hosted one quiz bowl tournament a year, but starting today we’re adding to that. Today we’re hosting the first—and last—North Iowa Conference Quiz Bowl Tournament. While the event will continue next year, it will be renamed for the new Top of Iowa Conference. This year ten teams are competing, representing smaller schools from around north central Iowa.
The Bears have three teams entered in today’s competition. Players include seniors Hannah Bernhard, Tony Kollasch, Taylor Illg, Zach Kollasch, and Dorothy Kirsch; juniors Joseph Espinosa, Logan Besch, and Devin Degen; sophomores Josh Hamilton, Andrew Thilges, and Logan Capesius; and freshmen Ben Degen, Noah Buscher, Drew Bacha, and Sam Trainer. Good luck to Coach David Burrow and the quiz bowl team!
The quiz bowl team recently finalized plans for their 16th trip to the National Academic Championships. Nine students plan to make the trip to the Washington, D.C. area at the end of May. We’ll give you more details on that trip as the date approaches.
Last Saturday Garrigan sent eight events to the Iowa High School Speech Association district large group speech contest in Spencer. The Bears had a good day, bringing home four division one (or excellent) ratings and four division two (or good) ratings. The ones were for the Ensemble Acting selection “One Sneaky Mouse”, the group mime “Thieves in the Night”, the musical theatre “Anatomy of a Musical”, and our radio broadcasting entry.
Students earning ones include seniors Mark Fakler, Morgan Frideres, Taylor Illg, Dorothy Kirsch, Hannah Bernhard, Taylor Frideres, Amanda Altman, Nick Kayser, and Betty Straub; as well as junior Mariah Bronk. They now advance to the state speech contest, which will be held next Saturday at East High School in Sioux City. Congratulations to Coaches Mary McCall and David Burrow, and all the speech team!
Last week the cast was announced for the BGHS spring play. This year director Carol Eischeid is producing a comedy called A Hauntin’ We Will Go. Cast members include seniors Dorothy Kisch, Taylor Illg, Mark Fakler, and Emily Riesenberg; as well as Hannah Bernhard, Nick Kayser, Betty Straub, and Morgan Frideres.
Also in the show are juniors James Quinlin, Carolyn Baxter, Johanna Vaske, and Mariah Bronk; sophomores Sam Harrington, Andrew Thilges, Precious Robeson, and Levi Capesius; and freshmen Sam Trainer, Caitlin Thilges, and John Zeimet. Mark your calendar now for Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, and be sure to see A Hanutin’ We Will Go.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Kaitlyn Fogarty. Here to tell you about her is Madeline Sullivan.
Kaitlyn Fogarty is a year-round athlete. She helped lead the danz squad to multiple state championships and has also won individual dance awards. She’s also a setter and libero on the volleyball team, she’s a catcher and infielder in softball, and she runs on the girls track team. Kaitlyn is also active in Christian Leadership, math team, and National Honor Society—and you’ve also probably heard her announcing here on the “Bear Facts”. She’ll be a college girl in the fall, and we wish Kaitlyn all the best in the future.
Thanks, Maddie! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there’s the North Iowa Conference quiz bowl tournament today at Garrigan. Also today Levi Capesius and Mark Fakler are at the Meistersingers honor choir in Waverly.
Monday night there’s a basketball quad, with the Bears hosting Humboldt. The danz squad will serve a sloppy joe supper during the games. Then Tuesday morning accelerated math students will take the AMC-12, a national mathematics test.
Also on Tuesday we’ll have the annual Blessing of the Throats for St. Blaise’s Day. At our student mass on Wednesday seven seniors will be commissioned as Eucharistic ministers.
Wednesday afternoon we’ll have a special assembly with performances from the speech entries that are bound for state contest. Then on Thursday we hope to finally get in the West Hancock basketball games that were twice postponed earlier this winter.
There’s also a freshman boys basketball game at Forest City Thursday night. Then next Friday the JV and varsity Bears host Forest City for Senior Night.
Finally next Saturday there’s the state speech contest in Sioux City. The math team competes at Iowa State that day, and the volleyball team will be hosting an adult tournament.
