SCHOLARSHIP and AWARD OPPORTUNITIES
In 2012, BGHS students accepted more than $275,000 worth of scholarships to further their education after high school. Some of these come from the colleges students will be attending, but many others are selected by a committee of BGHS staff members. Amounts of these local scholarships vary, ranging from around $100 - $2000. Among the opportunities available to Bishop Garrigan students are:
American Association of University Women
Criteria: Given to a girl (preferred) attending a two or four year program
Application: Spring of year, Application by BGHS scholarship application.
Selected by BGHS scholarship committee.
American Legion School Award (Wesley)
Criteria: Wesley student at BGHS
Application: Spring, Legion will request list of Wesley students
Selection made by Wesley Legion
Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen Award
Criteria: Based on citizenship
Application: Chosen by Garrigan

Farmers and Traders Savings Bank Scholarship
Criteria: Family member has account at FTSB
Application: Mid April,
Through FTSB application, pick up from counselor.
Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers Award
Criteria: Student who has volunteered services in church, school, community
Application:
Late April, Volunteer form from Auxiliary
Joe Kemna Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: Not based only on GPA etc, but other attributes
Application: Mid April, Through Joe Kemna application, pick up form from counselor
Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Award
Criteria: Has excelled in government class
Possibly pursue career in field of govt.
Amount: $100
Application: Recommendation through Govt. Dept.
P.E.O. Award
Criteria: Has attended the school all 4 years, female, highest average in English for 7 semesters
Tie broke by department decision
Application: Name submitted by English Dept.
Pharmacists Mutual Foundation Scholarships
Criteria: Student with parent employed by Pharmacist Mutual
Application: Check through Pharmacist Mutual
Kossuth Farm Bureau Award
Criteria: Boy or Girl, Farm Bureau Member
Application: Spring - through Farm Bureau application
Soroptimist Club of Algona Award
Criteria: Boy or girl, Preference to someone not receiving other aid, some weight given to those considering a business career
Application: Late April, Soroptimist application, pick up from counselor.
Selection made by soroptimist club.
Algona Lions Club Scholarship
Criteria: Need Based
Application: April, Eligible persons should submit applications to Lions Club,
Forms available from BGHS counseling office.
Algona Rotary Club Service Award
Criteria: Recognition for "service above self"
Application: Chosen by Garrigan
Bancroft
Area Rotary
Criteria: Bancroft area student
Application: Through Bancroft Rotary
Howard and Katherine Hoenk Foundation ( H and K)
Criteria: Career associated in health field or agronomy
Application: Spring, Eligible persons should pick up special form from Principal of Bishop Garrigan.
